Why smart people are better off with fewer friends

... Kanazawa and Li theorize that the hunter-gatherer lifestyles of our ancient ancestors form the foundation for what make us happy now. "Situations and circumstances that would have increased our ancestors’ life satisfaction in the ancestral environment may still increase our life satisfaction today," they write.

They use what they call "the savanna theory of happiness" to explain two main findings from an analysis of a large national survey (15,000 respondents) of adults aged 18 to 28.

First, they find that people who live in more densely populated areas tend to report less satisfaction with their life overall. "The higher the population density of the immediate environment, the less happy" the survey respondents said they were. Second, they find that the more social interactions with close friends a person has, the greater their self-reported happiness.

Also the higher the population density the more people vote Democrat. Big cities are unnatural and harmful to humans in many ways.

I have to wonder on your hypothesis: Do they vote Dem *because* they are packed in so tightly, or do they live like that because liberals are drawn to that kind of environment? I believe it’s the latter.

Great point, cities require more democrat style rules and centralized control because of the dense population and shared use of public spaces, transportation etc. They literally breed more democrats.

We are always frustrated by the lack of ability to understand our genius.

I think its a bit of both. But with young people striking out on their own, they tend to be drawn to the cities by the excitement and social life aspects of it.

Another study a few years ago reported that most American’s have one to two close friends. I haven’t seen other similar studies.

Probaby some of both. There is a certain percentage that flee the big city when they have the money or opportunity.

I believe it is the former. Humans are apex predators. The higher the density, the less freedom and the more rules are required to make it work.

I always thought it was because I’m an a**hole. Now I realize it’s because I’m really smart.

Also i think if you live out in the sticks you have to be more self-reliant (and content being that way).

Those two things are not mutually exclusive. ;-)

“Why smart people are better off with fewer friends”

WHAT a STUPID Statement.

I live in the middle of the Big Nothing. Town I live in is 600 people. My family has lived in this county since 1889. I have more friends here than any of my daughter’s neighbors, she lives in Northern VA.

The WaPo is a good example of ComDem Insanity.

they are mostly poor and on welfare, and so they live in the cheapest part of town, the inner city.

then they all vote democrat.

there ARE rich democrats, but mostly in power centers like state capitals and ny city and LA and the like

but in rural America most ‘rich’ areas are republican, and most rural middle income areas are a mix but trend republican
