One of my daughters was arrested for library fines in Copperas Cove, Texas. She spent five days in jail to cover the fines. If/when they bring back the DRAFT, she already has a reserved spot on The Group "W" Bench.

Typically a library will stamp discarded books, especially at their own sales.

There is a classic SciFi short story, "Computers Don't Argue" by Gordon R. Dickson, where a series of computer-aided errors leads to deadly consequences. It starts with a book club computer sending "Kidnapped" in error and leads to the customer being convicted for the killing of Robert Louis Stevenson.
As in many of Kafka's nightmares, you have an uncaring bureaucracy following the minutia but, with the 'able assistance' of the computers, being blind to the real issue.
You can read it here. Perhaps the 'perp' here should be happy he didn't rent one of the several movie versions of "Kidnapped"!

“One of my daughters was arrested for library fines in Copperas Cove, Texas. She spent five days in jail to cover the fines. To this day she still has the book.”
That is truly bizarre. Was the book worth it?

Interesting. I will have to check it out, as a Stevenson fan. I guess he is lucky he didn't check out Stevenson's The Suicide Club.

Read the thread for context. Look at the post I am responding to. Google a portion of if. Or do nothing. I don’t care. I don’t have time for hand holding. Lol.

No. It was a yoga/workout book and she rarely ever looked at it. But she said she’s keeping it because she “paid” for it.

Was giving it back not an option?
In my library system, IIRC, they only fine you up to the cost/value of the book, which you still have to pay. I don’t know what it takes to get the cops involved around here.

It was no real secret back in the VHS movie rental days that most of their money came from late fees.
Well before NetFlix, I wanted to create an Online movie rental business.
We would ship them out and collect the late fees.
I missed the boat by focusing to much on the wrong revenue stream.

But, seeing as how you're a fan of Seinfeld it's not surprising you'd come up with such banal reason for being lazy.

Oh get over yourself. The poster I responded to referenced Seinfeld. The quote itself mentioned Seinfeld. It was a pretty easy task to figure it out. Nearly every message board or comment section has these types of pop culture references. Jeez, here I am breakin’ your balls a little and right away you’re gettin’ fresh.

Be kind, rewind, even if 14 years later.
