The unrecognized decision that saved Apollo 13
BBC ^ | 14 Apr, 2016 | William Park

While planning the lunar landings, Nasa had a decision to make: What route would they use to reach the Moon? It was one of many that needed to be made, but little did they know then, it would have an important effect of the survival of the ill-fated Apollo 13 crew.

This Sunday, 17 April, marks the safe return of James Lovell, “Jack” Swigert and Fred Haise after almost 88 tense hours on board their critically wounded craft thanks to that stroke of luck. The drama started unfolding at almost 56 hours Ground Elapsed Time (GET), meaning it was the evening of 13 April in Houston. Shortly after a live television broadcast, Mission Control had asked Apollo 13 to run through some standard checks.

"13, we've got one more item for you, when you get a chance. We'd like you to stir up the cryo tanks,” said capsule communicator Jack Lousma at Mission Control. The purpose of stirring the cryogenic tanks containing the hydrogen and oxygen was to give more accurate readings of how much gas was left. But because of an electrical fault, one of the oxygen tanks exploded. Initially the crew thought a meteoroid had hit them, but it soon became apparent they were losing oxygen. “It looks to me… that we are venting something,” replied Jack Swigert. “It’s a gas of some sort.” The clock was ticking. The explosion on board Apollo 13 marked the start of one of the greatest rescue missions in human exploration, but the three crewmembers owed their lives to a decision made years previously.

Do your own research.

I already understand it... thought you might like to get a better understanding of it all since you were confused about the cabin temp situation.

"We were as cold as frogs in a frozen pool, especially Jack Swigert, who got his feet wet and didn't have lunar overshoes. It wasn't simply that the temperature dropped to 38 F: the sight of perspiring walls and wet windows made it seem even colder."

Astronaut Jim Lovell lying through his teeth, in a SECRIT conspiracy with the rest of NASA, Hollywood, spacecraft engineers and others to conceal the TRUTH about Apollo 13 astronauts almost baking to death, because ...well just because.

The truth concealed for 46 years, until revealed by a thermodynamics genius on FR.

You could always ask an occupant of the Apollo 13 capsule. Oh wait, someone already did:

“The movie depicts the command module very cold because we turned off most of the electrical systems to save power,” Lovell writes in an email. “The spacecraft cabin temperature on a normal mission is controlled by using heat produced by electrical systems, with the excess heat dissipating by radiation into space. With the electrical systems turned off, the temperature approached about 34 degrees Fahrenheit prior to entering the atmosphere.

Read more: http://www.airspacemag.com/need-to-know/how-hot-was-apollo-13-on-reentry-22877442/#6P0GKTPSOJrdqddY.99

The heat dissipators are to remove excess heat, not all of the heat, from the capsule. The dissipators do not make it anywhere near as cold as the temperature would be in a cold shut down.

Radiation from polished aluminum in space is about 10W/m^2, the lateral surface area of an Apollo command module is about 20m^2, giving a constant 200W of radiation. Source for dimension: http://pics-about-space.com/apollo-capsule-dimensions?p=3

Triangular cross section of the command module is about 5m^2, absorbance of polished aluminum results in about 102.5W/m^2 being absorbed (out of the 1367W/m^2 of sun exposure), but this is spread over 20m^2 (rotating capsule) so the result is aluminum exposed to 26.1W/m^2. Plug this into the equation for equilibrium temperature:

T=(26.1/(0.05*5.67E-8))^0.25= 309.8K = 36.8C

In actuality the equilibrium temperature is even lower, as the interior surface of the capsule also radiates. If the capsule was in vacuum the equilibrium temperature would be:

T=(13.1/(0.05*5.67E-8))^0.25 = 260.7K = -12.3C

Source for equation, radiation and absorbance of polished aluminum:

http://www.tech-know-group.com/essays/The_Bare_Bones_Basics_of_Radiative_Heat_Transfer.pdf

Since the interior is not in vacuum, you could expect an equilibrium temperature of 274K or so to be quite reasonable. You could then conduct a real world experiment to verify these calculations, by leaving the atmosphere inside the command module but remove all sources of heat. You might choose to call that experiment Apollo 13. I know I would.

If you understood it you'd explain it, instead of "leaving the exercise for the reader." That's the cheapest lie in science. See Go_Raiders post #103 for an example of what an actual stab at the science looks like.

Who twisted your panties in a wad? All I've done is ask some questions. Or is it that you become enraged when someone dares question the government at all? Or is NASA itself your golden God of Truth?

Grow up Dorothy, this isn't Kansas anymore.

You could always ask an occupant of the Apollo 13 capsule. Oh wait, someone already did:

Oh wait, you mean the astronauts working for the Department of Defense Agency called NASA, under military-level nondisclosure agreements and top secret classifications and direct orders? Yeah, let's ask them.

Since the interior is not in vacuum, you could expect an equilibrium temperature of 274K or so to be quite reasonable. You could then conduct a real world experiment to verify these calculations, by leaving the atmosphere inside the command module but remove all sources of heat. Yeah, you'd also cite a source that calculates radiative heat loss for aluminum in a planetary atmosphere of greenhouse gases - rather than aluminum in the vacuum of space. Why? Because the radiative heat dissipation in a planetary atmosphere is helped by orders of magnitude through conduction, and so is just a tad different than the radiation in a vacuum helped by nothing except single random molecules in hundreds of square miles of space that come drifting by.

So instead, let's talk about aluminum, shall we? And let's throw in aluminum equations to spiff it up. Just don't mention the vacuum thing, m'kay? Don't want to give the fun away...

Thanks for playing, you've been the most interesting one yet.

"I’ve seen on other threads where you think the moon landings were faked. Bizarre."

Just saw this now reading back through the thread. Explains a lot. Very sad.

What does it explain? That I ask questions? You know what's sad? Political character assassination to silence questioning is sad. It puts the blood of hundreds of millions of people directly on your soul. Congratulations, genius, that's your real reward outside of the pittance your masters throw you. But don't worry - all you have to do to save yourself from hell is not believe in it. See? Easy. LOL

We have a Moon-Landing Truther clown!!!!
I didn’t think those were around anymore.
This is great. Say some more ML Truther stuff! Please. Come on you can do it.
“TV studio!”
“Shadows wrong!”
“No stars!”
“Perfect conspiracy of thousands”
“Nine Saturn V launches just to do a hoax”

ROTFLOL.

I guess you really can't explain where all the Apollo 13 heat went.

Please, feel free to continue to melt down. Because changing the thread topic by repeating and magnifying hearsay slander is the standard way of answering questions on the thermodynamics of failed spacecraft environmental control systems.

Incredible.

What part of my questions sent you into your rage?

Or is it that you're just obeying orders?

Or are you just a slut, spewing personal abuse for money?

Because you damn sure aren't taking about science here.

People were pointing at you and laughing last year too. Your deep stupidity is on record. You’re a Moon landing truther.

Or perhaps you’ve gained a few IQ points since last year.

What say you: Did American astronauts ever set foot on the moon?

Lotta research just to distract this thread - and for what, to quote other abusers like you? I wonder why. Sounds like you're into scientific consensus arguments. Maybe that's why people are posting equations of aluminum in greenhouse gases instead of the vacuum of space. Do you think human caused global warming is a legitimate theory? Thousands of scientists say so - are you going to go against them? Are you a scientist? To what level in what field?

Why should I answer any questions you have after you treat me with such exteme disrespect? Or are you used to that, abusing people to get them to comply with your abuse? Do you make them thank you for it, too? Well you're out of luck with me, abuser. You can take your disrespect and personal attacks and shove them. You disrupt this thread with your abusiveness it's on you, not me. I owe you nothing.

Pointing and laughing? You're a little girl. And you're also the lowest level operative. You're NASAs actual answer to my question. Dear reader, look at the crudity and ugliness of Dagnabitt's posts to me on this thread. That's the answer to questioning NASA about Apollo 13. Not a scientific answer, but a paid punk spewing ugly, hateful grade school level insults like a little girl.

Now ask yourself whether those astronauts were hot or cold. Look at that photo of pointing, laughing people Dagnabitt posted on behalf of NASA, and ask yourself why some troll would be paid to respond like that if NASA was telling the truth about the science.

Game, set and match - NASA lies.

So the personal insults can stand, but my pointing them out as existing get erased?

That’s how this NASA question gets ended here - with protected mockery?

Why, because it’s settled science, like global warming?

Normal people call Jim Lovell a hero - you call him a liar and a lifelong conspirator to a massive fraud.

Normal American patriots call the other 23 men who travelled to the moon heroes, you call them all liars and lifelong conspirators to a massive fraud.

Normal people celebrate the accomplishments of the thousands of civilian and military engineers, scientists, aerospace workers, and others (including those who died in the process) who made the Apollo program's manned lunar landings one of this country's greatest achievements. You crap on their achievement and on our country and call all of them liars and conspirators to a massive fraud.

You are getting all the respect you deserve.

Wipe your eyes, shill. Your histrionic narrative came out of Hollywood. Normal people question things. Abnormal people demand group loyalty tests. Your vile words and accusations are your own defamatory fantasies, not mine. Shall I go into the millions of brave soldiers who fought and died for our right to freely question the government, and shall I do as you do and claim you are spitting on their graves? Because actually it would fit against you, while you are denying that astronauts and engineers appropriately conceal classified information - which is ridiculous.

If Apollo 13 was a lie, and if the moon landings were a lie, and your frothing aside I'm not saying they were, then how do you know it was for disgraceful reasons? Do you have such contempt for government operations that you actually believe secrecy equals fraud? Again, you're ridiculous.

Nothing you say rises above the squeals of a shrieking child, trying to drown out rational discussion. And for what goal? You're not wrapping yourself in the flag - your shredding what it stands for. So save your trembling lips, you've spread enough contempt to make that pose absurd at this point. I questioned heat loss in a vacuum - THAT'S IT. It's not a damn Rorschach blot for your neurotic free association. Instead of vomiting all over the thread with abuse, take a damn pill.

A great thermos bottle filled with scalding hot coffee will cool off in time. So did the capsule.
