Cutting the Cable Cord (vanity)
Vanity

Posted on 05/09/2016 9:57:53 AM PDT by TigerClaws

I'm considering doing this. Roku, Sling, and HD cable antenna with 50 mile radius.

Anyone here already cut the cable cord?

My main concern is catching sports during football season.

Thanks for any tips.

Cut my WOW cable 4 weeks ago. Kept the phone & internet. Reduced my bill by 50 bucks a month, and I seriously don’t miss it.

Hulu, Amazon Prime, Netflix, torrents, and Chomecast have made cable TV a faded memory.

I’ve got Prime and Netflix already.

Got cable down to $50 a month, but friends using Roku/Sling subscriptions are paying $30 a month and have HBO.

ESPN 1 and 2 are on Roku.

Would be nice to save a bit, but not sure sports nuts can pull it off yet.

Another cord cutter. I enjoy sports, but it’s not do or die if it’s on TV for me. With digital tv, I have 20 plus over the air channels. We logged our tv watching habits and found about 90 percent of what we watched was OTA.

Do you recall the name of the digital antenna you have?

I put a network switch in my AV cabinet (which I knocked out the wall, and built a sliding door to cover it) and I have my tv over the fireplace next to it.

Hardwiring it worked out well, because I have my XBox, Apple TV, Samsung DVD, Mac Mini, and the TV as well all hardwired into it instead of having them all hook up wirelessly.

I did this a a couple of years ago. I quickly got very used to Netflix and Amazon Prime which I get for less than $20/mo (combined). They don't have all the shows but enough of them so that I always have plenty to watch and a long queue I'll probably never have the time to get through. Movie selection is iffy but usually something I can find to watch. A lot of good documentaries.

BTW YouTube is a good source for old TV shows, documentaries and movies and with a Roku box or similar device, you can send it to your TV set. You can also pull up just about every music video ever made and tons of concerts too. All for free.

I did miss the NFL football games but now have an excuse to go to a Buffalo Wild Wings or some other sports bar on a Sunday afternoon. Or hang out at a friend's house for the day (I bring beer and snacks).

It’s very easy to install it yourself. It is a standard app in the Android Play Store. The Exodus addon is easy to install with the instructions at http://tvaddons.ag/.

The one I showed you is the one I wish I had bought. Mine only has 1 GB of RAM, that one has 2. Mine works fine, but that one has more RAM, which is always good. I did a lot of research over the past few weeks, and that looks like a really good deal.

I’m telling you, these things work great. I was running Kodi on Linux Mint on a computer with a 350 watt power supply. This thing uses a cell phone charger. Uses far less electricity than a computer.

You can install Kodi on anything you have right now to check it out; Android phone or tablet, iPhone or iPad, Windows computer, etc.

https://kodi.tv/download/

Use Wifi, though, not your data plan.

Yes. They sell them on eBay that way, but the Firestick is running Android and Kodi is a standard app in the playstore.

I cut the cable last year, getting internet only. I am also a big sports fan, and recently signed up for Sling TV so I can get NBA playoffs and more college and pro football games this fall. I run Sling TV through an Amazon fire TV black box. Reception has been good so far. The nice thing about Sling TV is you can also watch it on a tablet. But you can only watch Sling TV on one device at a time, since the signal is being streamed.

Just go to Winegard.com, everything you need to know about digital antennas.

You might want to get a digital tuner. You can make antennas for it by watching examples on Youtube. At one time I was getting 4 PBS channels. There is a web page that will show you where to aim the antennas from your location. ( The name escapes me at the moment. I think it might be TV fool or something like that. )
Good Luck!

Outstanding!

I looked at you tube and it appeared to be fairly complex.

Thanks!

sports would be about the only reason to maintain the live feed.

i cut the cord 10+ years ago and download the small handful of shows i’d actually want to watch

***** Anyone here already cut the cable cord? *****

My wife and I cut the pay TV - ours was Dishnet - for well over a year now. If I could pay for only the channels we wanted like the old C-Band satellite dishes offered I would have stayed. But no...you have to buy a package.

We had fiber optics Internet service brought into our town and we cut Dishnet and went with a very fast Internet. My wife and I split the line plus it’s connected to a laptop that goes to our bedroom TV. Both of us can stream simultaneously to our hearts content with no buffering.

I can stream Fox News or CNN when I want to watch something of interest. My wife loves watching stuff on YouTube.

When bad weather is coming the local channels have websites so we can stay abreast to what’s going on.

We watch movies in our bedroom. We stream or download and don’t have to use any special ROKU boxes or need a smart TV.

Our Internet service is 50mb down and 7mb up and cost us $48/month. If we need to, we can double the speed for an additional $10/month but the 50mb works fine for us.

We don’t miss the satellite/cable connection at all.

I bought one of these several years ago when it was on sale ($100) and works great, you don't see just a football, you see the dimples on a football.

We just re-upped with Sling when the NBA post-season started (paid 90 days ahead and picked up a free Roku in the bargain), I get most of the Spurs games. We’ll probably drop it after 90 days, between Hulu and Netflix (and moderate OTA channel selection), we get most of what we want. Only thing we don’t get, which is miss a bit but not as much as I thought I would, is Fox News live.
