A bison calf that tourists loaded into their vehicle at Yellowstone National Park because they were concerned for its welfare could not be reunited with its herd and had to be euthanized, park officials said Monday as they reasserted the importance of avoiding wildlife

The rule of thumb around here with large animals is if they’re able to stand treat them and feed them.If they’re down then there’s little hope for recovery.I saw the picture of the little guy,in my opinion he had a good chance to make it with the proper care.

I don't think NPS rangers/biologists are itching to start capping people simply because they euthanized a wild animal.

The calf was apparently rejected by its herd. The herd at a refuge would not just arbitrarily accept it, and it would probably have to be taken care of personally by the staff of the refuge. With the problem of housing, feeding, and taking care of the animal until finding a location willing to take it (if there is a place that could make an opening for a lone calf that would require extra care), unfortunately, euthanizing it was likely the only reasonable option.

Pretty rotten solution. Probably plenty of zoos or even a farmer who would take him. Plain old rotten government.

There was a previous story about the tourists taking the bison calf to the park rangers. That story said they took the bison calf back to the herd. THIS article is the rest of the story, with the bad ending.

That’s what happens with a herd mentality — the herd moves on, you can’t keep up, you get left behind. That’s probably why those tourists picked up the calf in the first place. I hope those rangers will have nightmares for a long time.

Bubba: Anyway, like I was sayin’, Bison is the fruit of the prairie. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey’s uh, Bison-kabobs, Bison creole, Bison gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple Bison, lemon Bison, coconut Bison, pepper Bison, Bison soup, Bison stew, Bison salad, Bison and potatoes, Bison burger, Bison sandwich. That- that’s about it.

Well, the tourists have learned a valuable lesson: Don’t approach the government expecting that its agents will help you. Not only did they not get help, they were fined for their trouble.

Nonsense! None of this would have happened if the idiot tourists had obeyed the law.

I’m still waiting for their home state to be disclosed.

Regardless, the tourists should have left the bison calf alone. Herds often leave the weak and ill behind. Survival of the fittest ensures a strong and more health herd.

They should have contacted the park rangers not made contact with a wild animal.

Actually, the calf had been rejected before the tourists took him in.

Thats why they did what they did

“Nonsense! None of this would have happened if the idiot tourists had obeyed the law.”

I don’t think you are right.

What seems more likely to me is that the herd left the poor calf, and alone he was just looking for help in the first place. The tourists tried to do the right thing and took him to the park rangers. If the tourists hadn’t picked up the calf, he probably would have starved to death alone, or had been eaten by wolves. How was that better?

just out side the park in Montana there are ranches that raises bison to sell as meat. I am sure that if contacted that one of the bison ranchers on the reservation would of driven up that day to retrieve the calf. yes he would of been on a farm being raised for food but he would of been allowed to live a few years. all I can say is what a waste.

Why didn’t someone take the calf and bottle feed it until it was old enough to eat on its own?

I raised a piglet on a bottle and several calves too. It’s not that difficult.

There might be more to this story. Perhaps the calf was sick and euthanizing it was a way to continue natural selection?

Why don’t they want to kill all the displaced Muslims?

“Why didn’t someone take the calf and bottle feed it until it was old enough to eat on its own?”

I am sure they would have been able to find someone who was willing to do that. But they didn’t even try.

He should have gone to a zoo — the San Diego Zoo, for example, has a bison exhibit. He would have been perfect there. I’m wondering if there isn’t more to this story.

Yes, it was expendable. There is no shortage of buffalo.

Payback to tourists

They wanted to make an example of them

If the calf had been attacked by wolves and the media covered it they would have air evacuated the calf to the finest vet facility with a blank check to rehabilitate it and re integrate it into the herd when it recovered

Just like they do with condors and other protected animals
