Ten Arabic Words: A challenge to national security professionals engaged in the Global War On Terror

But if you are a national security professional, senior military officer or political leader involved in any aspect of the “Global War On Terror,” AKA “Countering Violent Extremism,” these are ten words that should already be a part of your working vocabulary. If you can’t readily discuss their meaning, significance, and relationships, then you are worse than a fool, you are disgrace to your office and a danger to your country.

If you don’t already have a firm grasp of the meaning of these words, then you are as prepared to conduct the GWOT as President Obama’s “Pajama Boy” is prepared to fight a heavyweight MMA champion in a no-quarter steel-cage death match.

1) Dawah - Proselytizing for Islam,
2) Dhimmi - a non-Muslim citizens of an Islamic state / theocracy,
3) Hijra - Mohammed flees Mecca for Medina, begins the Muslim Era,
4) Jizya - tax levied annually upon Dhimmi citizens under Islamic control,
5) Kafir - a disbeliever or infidel in terms of belief in the Islamic religion,
6) Shaheed - a martyr to the faith of Islam,
7) Shariah - Islamic theological & civil law derived from the Koran, the Haditha and the Sunna,
8) Takfir - act of declaring (denouncing) a Muslim to be a Kafir,
9) Taqiyya - (also Idtirar) - Shariah-based dispensation for lying or false allegiance under coercion or pressure,
10) Ummah - the whole community of believers in Islam.

takfir is the one word I didn’t know. It is an accusation of apostasy (which carries the death sentence).

More exactly, takfiri is the accusation made that other Muslims are insufficiently Islamic: see Jihad Watch. I started reading about Islam in 1980. I read this book called "Dagger of Islam by John Laffin"(out of print).
