A Zoot Suit--Kay Kyser & His Orchestra (1942)

Believe it or not, there are a couple of stores out here where you can purchase zoot suits.

The scenes in the piss-yellow hot rod between the young girl and the cool dude.
Even though he disparaged them, I most enjoyed the Beach Boys in the soundtrack, both there and the end.

I think it was the first time that The Beach Boys were given the place of honor: either punctuating the ending of the film or beginning the rolling of the credits (in this instance with All Summer Long).
Later instances:
Never Been Kissed (Don’t Worry Baby)
Almost Famous (Feel Flows)
Love, Actually (God Only Knows
Vanilla Sky (Good Vibrations)

Yeah, rabid BB fan - especially their seldom-played middle period [Pet Sounds through Holland, from which period Cameron Crowe took Feel Flows, from Surf’s Up]. I was the weird one that never got into The Beatles.

I actually wrote a letter to Kay Kyser once. Asked him about some films he was in. Got a nice response back.

Interestingly, “All Summer Long” was from 1964, after the time in which the movie was set, but to me, it seemed appropriate.

Although the film was set on the night of August 31-September 1, 1962, it featured few, if any songs from that year.

Where were YOU IN 62?

Living in West Whittier, Calif. and rooting for the Los Angeles Dodgers to win the NL pennant.

George Lucas first movie was the futuristic sci fi drama, THX 1138. In American Graffiti, the John Milner Coupe bore the reproduced California yellow and black license plate with a tribute to Lucas's movie shortened to the period correct California six digit format in use at the time.

Netflix has it, here is the introduction scene

My favorite scene is when they pull into Santa Fe and Dennis Wilson assesses all the competition as they cruise by all the muscle cars parked and you can see all these wonderful hot rods from the past go by in his window.

Definitely the chaining of the cops axle LOL. I was 16 when that movie came out. Next would be Toad trying to buy booze. Wolfman Jack really made the movie though.

I can’t believe I saw one of Kay Kyser’s movies. So I know who he is. I also know about ‘Kay Kyser’s Kollege of Musical Knowledge.’
