Delta Air Lines paid for and installed a pair of "innovation lanes" at its hometown airport in Atlanta. The lanes are much better designed than the standard security checkpoints found at airports around the US, and the airline hopes it can double the throughput thanks to some clever ideas.
Rather than having TSA agents use hand-pushed carts to bring empty trays from the exit back to the entrance of the line, the new lanes use an automated conveyor belt system. And instead of having travelers stack up behind one another to drop off their belongings to be scanned, there are five different "divestment points" so faster travelers can drop off their bags and move on without waiting for a slower person in front of them.
Finally, the automated bin system can route bins that set off screening alarms to a separate area for inspection, again freeing up TSA agents to focus on screening rather than the logistics of moving baggage around.
Delta says it spent more than $1 million on the system, which it thought up and deployed in less than two months. No word if it will be rolled out to more airports, but anything that can help get travelers through the TSA's security lines faster will be well received by the airlines and the public.
How about someone in the government has the courage to say the name that must not be spoken, Radical Islam. And then you profile the crap out of everyone like El Al does. After that you can put on the dog and pony show security at the gate. You can also throw in the beautiful women random wanding at the gate.
...sad, half the troupe is gone(Peter Bergman died on March 9, 2012, Phil Austin died on June 18, 2015)
I prefer Neil Diamond’s “Desiree.”
“It was the third of June,
On that summer’s day
When I became a man
At the hands of a girl almost twice my age.”
Having worked on some automated systems for government agencies, I can tell you that the unions will fight this tooth and nail.
Touché.
As many times as I’ve heard that song, I never really paid attention to the words.
I suspect if the TSA is like most government agencies their primary goal is to maintain headcount - and many of these suggested efficiency improvements would in fact reduce it. :)
“If you don’t have federalism, it doesn’t work,” said Sen. John D. Rockefeller, D-W.Va.
“You can’t professionalize unless you federalize,” agreed Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D.
Agree. And, AMEN!
Radical Islam is a redundancy. Islam is RADICAL. They are just following "the prophet" and his ways while on earth. If you truly follow Islam and it's "prophet" you must hate the infidel or Kafir and kill them if they refuse to submit or pay the jiza tax and live as a subject of the Muslim. It is all in the Koran. Read it!
The best security I have seen is in Amsterdam.
The security people actually interview everyone getting on the plane and watch their eyes during the interview.
And this process happens at individual gates so that it doesn’t create a bottle neck at the entry of the airport.
Similar to Frankfurt.
Transited there last week as well.
Only downside of screening at the gate is bad guys can penetrate deeper into the airport in greater numbers spreading havoc over a wider area. (Of course I am assuming that security up front is effective, not like the kabuki theater we have in the US)
When I entered the American Airlines security queue at Frankfurt the screener asked if I spoke German or English. I answered yes. He wasn’t amused. But I do speak both!
I'll bet they don't do affirmative action hires for security either.
The sun isn’t going down, the horizon is moving up!
In 2009 I moved from Michigan to Maryland. It took 8 months to sell the house and move my family. I drove the 20 hour round trip every 2-3 weekends.
On moving day, I decided to fly home. Delta canceled my flight THREE times. I ended up hitching a ride with someone I knew who was driving to Detroit. I missed the moving van by 30 minutes.
Since then, I’ve only flown Delta once and that’s cause someone else made the reservation
A private company with customer service and its own business at stake, does what the government’s TSA was incapable of doing. You can just imagine how many layers of bureaucrat’s management committee meetings at the TSA it would take to TRY to do what Delta did in less than two months.
You are correct.
I think it was the second “talkie” LP I ever bought (A child’s garden of grass)... the other was Vaughn Meager or Meader ... the JFK family/White House
The security people I dealt with at Schipol were professional. Not the grab ass apes I have had to deal with at Reagan Intl in DC. WORST experience ever. The separated me from my family for what ever reason. My wife and kids boarded the plane and I was detained. I never got a good explanation and missed my flight. Had to “negotiate” with these porch you know whats for the next 4 hours until I could get to a gate to catch another flight. The whole time they were laughing and dancing and b. s ing each other like they were at a family party or something. Real security there especially in DC. I got a real insight as to what TSA really is that day.
You experience at DCA was probably your fault because you didn’t salute and snap to attention with sufficient enthusiasm. You’re lucky they didn’t ship you off to the Gulag.
