Wife worked full-time at an organized church office for 9 1/2 years now. Worked 35 hours a week and received insurance and health care benefits, etc.
Fiscal year cycles at June 30. She was the elimination of her position this past week and given the option to continue at 19 hours a week, part time. She has said no, she needs a job with benefits. They surprised her yesterday, Friday, with her last day worked. Their letter says she is paid until end of June and 4 weeks into July for sick days and left over vacation time.
Now her termination letter say June 17th.
Her birthday is Dec 24, 1956 -- which makes her 59 1/2 in one week, June 24th this year.
Does legal status change once ones passes the 59 1/2 age when it comes to retirement laws or is that half birthday only relevant to penalties on i.r.a. account withdrawls? Could the difference of one week, change her ability to get early pension benefit or are there laws surrounding 59 1/2?
This is the state of Florida and one of the Catholic Dioceses down here.

Some companies balance your age with time with the company.
I was 48 when I started with a company, made it through 5 lay-offs before I was hit at age 57 (9-yrs). Was able to draw retirement from the company when I was laid-off.
Insurance is the kicker. Obamacare didn’t lower insurance premiums. It has resulted in higher premiums and higher deductibles and less coverage. That is unless you want to change sex equipment.
Many might be better off saving their money and reading the Bible at home on Sunday mornings. Seriously.

When you reach age 59 1/2, you can withdraw from retirement funds without penalty regardless of when you retired. It’s your age when you request a distribution that counts. At least that’s how it is for IRA and 401K.

Hero dog and savvy lady. Although she’s right, had she brought a weapon (gun, bear spray) the ordeal would have been over quickly.

George, you are giving us an incomplete picture because you are not telling us your side of the economic situation.
Are YOU employed? Retired? Are you receiving government assistance? Living on pension? Living on investments?
What’s YOUR health care situation? Were you on your wife’s plan? Does your employer have a health care plan?
Is she eligible for unemployment benefits? Is the employer offering a severance package?
Without additional information, I agree with those who are saying to take the part-time job until she can find something full-time with benefits. But understand two things. 1) She must make clear that she won’t fulfill all her old full-time duties at part-time pay. She must negotiate that and 2) Have no regrets leaving them in the lurch the minute she’s is accepted to start a full-time job.
The employment game is different than when you and I were young. It is more ruthless and cut-throat.
I was laid off after 19-1/2 years at age 54 in 2010 so I understand what a shock this is. In the end, the Lord had a reason for this so pray for His wisdom in understanding what He wants to teach you. In my case, I had a roughly two-year journey through the “desert” before finding an answer. Now, I have a job that pays roughly the same as what I was making in the old job.
Florida is a better place to job-hunt than New England. They will be sympathetic to age issues because so many live down there. Get on LinkedIn. Use some networking skills. Put that resume together and start searching.
But, most of all, pray. Maybe there is something in your lives that God wants urgently to correct and this was His wake-up call. It was for me.
