I sincerely believe that these athletic programs need to be abolished and basically be removed. Universities should be about learning, not extending the high school glory years for oversexed athletes.

Absolutely, it's time.

Even if they weren't sexual predators, the corruption of the entire system inherent in calling them "students," as universities construct increasingly preposterous excuses for curriculums and bend grade standards to suit them -- many of whom are completely illiterate -- needs to end.

Baseball has functioned perfectly well for more than a hundred years without requiring the taxpayers to destroy higher education for the sake of their farm system. Once "trans females" start competing in women's sports, the pressure to do away with all organized jockery will become too great to withstand. It will be for all the wrong reasons, but good riddance all the same.

Yes. And let’s ban fraternities, sororities, and anything else that makes the college experience fun.

I agree. Let the NFL, NBA, etc., set up farm teams, they certainly have the money.

so he let three of obama’s sons rape his girlfriend while she was unconscious?

What a guy.

His defense was they attacked the girl as soon as he laid her down.

WHY would you let three guys follow you into taking your girl up to bed?

I couldn’t tell from the article if he even had sex with her.

But he didn’t try to stop them, so that’s that. 25 years. If he’s a senior, he’ll be about my age when he gets out

Agreed, however, how will the masses react if the circus is taken away and universities get back to their primary purpose, education?

I believe that student athletes in college should be paid. Especially for basketball and football. Far too many kids are exploited and taken advantage of for their skills. And yes you can say that they get a free education, but the truth is that they were never qualified to be there in the first place.

Do tell? Hum. Interesting observation. My grandson is among the best in track in my state at long jump and hurdles. He just graduated high school as an Honors student and several school records in athletics. Oh and he has worked part time while doing this. He wasn't given any scholarships that would matter on academics because many do not offer track athletic scholarships. However a church affiliated university {a Conservative Christian Church} awarded him a full scholarship for four years. His career goal? To become a Surgeon.

One of his friends a quarterback at a rival school also top notch chose another church based college. He too earned an athletic scholarship and had chances for being in the Ivy League. Two smart and wise young men.

Yes some sports programs in colleges and universities have issues. So clean them up. It makes far more sense to have young men expending energy on a sport than time otherwise would be wasted elsewhere. Have a strict discipline policy that is the key. That is part of sports.

Now as for the more pressing realities. Most universities today academically are Marxist Stink Holes needing a Tenure fumigation and realistic curriculum of true career based courses. Rid the campuses of the Marxist teaching "Hey anything goes man" Marcuse disciples and watch the athletic department issues straighten out as well. Athletics when managed right can be beneficial for both students and the school. Yes it would also require a cleaning out of the NCAA management as well. Cut the number of people running it, develop basic rules all can understand without having to hire lawyers and play the game.

“I sincerely believe that these athletic programs need to be abolished and basically be removed.”

But then they would have to fire like 200 hundred remedial level teachers.

I think if we brought back public executions lots of this crap would stop pretty damn quick.

You drag these 4 to a gallows in night shirts and no undies and hang them and film it. Then you show it to all college students at the beginning of each term.

When they see rapists dangling at the end of a rope struggling to live and shitting and pissing themselves as the life slowly drains from there eyes they will see such behavior isn't cool.

Yeah its harsh but damn it this shit needs to stop.

You’re taking a beating on this thread, but you are right, perhaps your reasoning needs adjustment.

I think college athletics is fine and can be an ebhancement to the learning experience. However requiring the rest of the student body to subsidize it through athletic fees is the reason I would abolish these sports. If it pays for itself I’m ok with anything they want to do, athletic or non athletic. If students cannot gain academic acceptance to an institution, we are only pretending to give them an education. Your point is spot on in this regard.

College is expensive enough (I just finished with the last of three so I know) without paying for superfluous BS such as athletic programs that do not pay the freight. These fees are significant. I didn’t want to pay for them and told them. They don’t care.

Wall Street wants athletes when they hire because of all of their driven personalities. Your idea is dumb. The only thing I would agree with you is that there should be no federal funding of sports at University (I think no federal funding for any colleges in any way).

So, you accuse all athletes of being rapists, or potential rapists? That is as bigoted and ignorant as claiming all blacks are criminals.

Athletics teach teamwork, competition, respect for rules, planning, and the value of hard work.

You will NEVER find a large demographic without bad apples, even in your own circle of friends/acquaintances.

This guy was scum, and he should rot in prison. But saying all athletes are the same? Shame on you.

Harvard athletic program was established in 1852...

Harvard Athletics Mission Statement

Education through Athletics Athletic participation helps our students grow, learn, and enjoy themselves while they use and develop their personal, physical, and intellectual skills. Harvard values the lessons that have long been taught by athletic participation: the pursuit of excellence through personal development and teamwork, ethical and responsible behavior on the field and off, adherence to the spirit of rules as well as to their letter, leadership and strength of character, and sportsmanship – respect for one’s opponents, acceptance of victory with humility, and acknowledgement of defeat with grace. In teaching these lessons to its students, Harvard instills habits which will lead students to better and healthier lives. While winning is not an end in itself, we believe that the efforts by our intercollegiate athletes to be their best will lead them to succeed throughout their lives.
