New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

I'm not too sure on the pronunciation

'S ok. No one in New Jersey is either..

They don't need to pronounce the name, they just look for the 'D' and pull the lever. That's how NJ gets such stellar representatives.

Back in the 80s, I got a liberal ex-boyfriend onto Pat Buchanan’s mailing list.

Morning, FRiends! I’m going to Weight Watchers in a few minutes. I expect to break even, which is fine.

Today is Bill the Son’s final day of college education!!!

Speaking of Bill, Bill the Cardinal has reappeared. I was worried about him after Mrs. Bill had a tantrum on the pergola, but I guess he’d just gone to a motel for a few days until she cooled off.

Moe’sha a common “Ebonics” name in the US of A.

Of course, then there is the infamous La - A. A real name on a real birth certificate. When queried, the mother said, “It’s Ladasha. The dash don’t be silent.”

Yah. Like that.

If you had told me that you were going to tell me that you were going to be a grandpa before I went to bed, I would have waited for the announcement. But see, YOU had to wait for my reply! So THERE!

CONGRATULATIONS!! I can tell you from experience it is much more gratifying to be a grandparent than a parent. When the babes are fussy or messy, you just hand them back. In the meantime, you get to take part in all the loves and hugs.

I was up at 0400 and from then until just about 15 minutes ago, I was setting up the new printer. I had a tough time deciding whether to go wireless or use the USB, but I finally settled on the latter. And now, the question is, do I get a dedicated FAX line installed? I have to send FAXes to someone about twice to three times a year, so I wonder about it.

Of course, the phone jack is across the room...

Anyway, I will think about that a little more. It will raise my Cox bill by $20, but it will also give me more channels to watch. And then there is the glaring question: Will it be worth it for the next six to eight months that I’m here?

My brother in CO sent me an email telling me he had a book to send me. I already have his personal history, so I’m curious. He never saw the books I have. They were mostly in boxes the last time he was here.

He used to send me all his outdated electronics including printers and scanners. He doesn’t do that any more. Maybe he found someone who was needier than I, though I can’t imagine that in HIS family.

First borns are often early.

I'm hoping for no later than January 27th. That would put the squirt in the year of the Monkey, allowing numbah juan sun to say "Well I'll be a monkey's uncle" for the next six months or so.
