Although only about 8 percent of pregnant women in a new U.S. study reported smoking cigarettes, twice as many tested positive for high levels of a chemical that indicates nicotine exposure.
The researchers analyzed data on 787 women who self-reported any cigarette use during the last trimester of pregnancy and had provided urine samples. The samples were tested for cotinine, which indicates nicotine exposure, and for evidence of other drugs including amphetamines, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, cannabinoids such as marijuana, cocaine, muscle relaxants, short-acting opioids such as heroin, long-acting opioids including buprenorphine and methadone, and phencyclidine (PCP).
The average age was 28. Most of the women had private insurance, while about a third were insured by Medicaid, the U.S. insurance program for low-income families.

Back in the 70s, I knew a woman who got pregnant — and then took up smoking because she was hoping to have an under-sized baby and spare herself a lot of pain.
I don’t know how that all turned out for her, because that was the last time I had a conversation with her.
I can’t think of anything more white trash than a women smoking and drinking while pregnant.
Pot also has been handicapping babies.
And all of us are a product of our own generations who did. If so, what disorders are you suffering from because your great great grandma and granddad did? And their generations before them?
I'm a man, and I smoked and drank when my wife was pregnant.
Why would they?
I am not for smoking when pregnant, but the hysteria about it is overwrought and has ulterior motives.
Back in the day when a lot of people smoked all sorts of kids were born to mothers who smoked. I Love Lucy is an example.
In my family I know my grandmother smoked and my aunt smoked. My mom and cousin turned out fine. In fact both of them were little girl genius types who got skipped in school when they were young because they we so far ahead.
I am not for smoking or for pregnant women smoking, but the hysteria Is outsized to the danger to the baby.
My mom smoked a pack a day while she was pregnant with me. She drank as well.
My IQ has been tested at 136.
So piss off.

I admit smoking after conception?
It is HER body, hands off her nicotine!
In the game of life, the children of these evil women are already deformed in the womb. They wont be competing against your children. There is Darwinism in everything, especially in society. However, socialism will try to even the field. It is genetic these socialists are up against.
I was the only one my mom smoked with while pregnant and I was the biggest of the lot.
What do you self identify as today?
(relax, it's a joke)
Vaping.
Nicotine is nicotine regardless of the delivery mechanism.
So smart you don’t understand the concept of risk.
I could be wrong but I suspect that the dangers of smoking are not as bad as these totalitarians would have us believe. Just my opinion based on the fact that the only two people I knew that got lung cancer were not smokers. And that of the hundreds of people I have known I don’t reply recall that many dying young except through accident. Yet I hear all the time about the epidemic numbers. Something doesn’t add up. I know that other health advocates, like the diabetes people tell wild lies about the numbers of diabetics. I suspect that this is the case with smokers too. There’s just too much money to be made by health fear mongering.
When I was almost 41 Weeks’ pregnant with my first child, with an extra 50 lbs on my 5’1” frame, I went to happy hour with my friend. I had one glass of wine and you’d think I was a serial killer judging by the looks I got! This was in 1982 when it wasn’t as bad as it is now. I had him the next day, btw, and he weighed 9 lb. 4 oz!
People lie om polls if the true answer makes them look bad.

When I was pregnant with my 3 kids in the 70’s my doctors weren’t at all concerned that I smoked. Their biggest concern...weight gain. I quit during my 3rd pregnancy and haven’t had a cigarette in 41 years. By the way, all 3 were over 9 1/2 lbs. and they are all healthy adults.
