Early Voting Limits Time for Trump Comeback

Early Voting Limits Time for Trump Comeback

Every election year, as a matter of habit and convenience, we all talk about “Election Day” as though it is a defined nationwide event. But the reality is far more complex thanks to the advent of widespread no-excuse-required voting prior to Election Day by mail or in person. Indeed, as Patrick Healy of the New York Times reminds us today, nearly a third of the ballots counted in the last presidential general election were cast before Election Day — a figure that regularly rises as states follow a trend toward less traditional voting practices.

It is difficult to generalize about early-voting practices, unfortunately, because the 50 states have wildly varying laws and procedures. Some of these, such as the dates for beginning to mail out absentee ballots — effectively the beginning of “Election Day” — are for the most part informal. Others reflect very different local decisions about balloting procedures, ranging from the three all-mail-ballot states (Colorado, Oregon, and Washington) to states (including most northeastern states and several in the South) that have no early in-person voting and only allow absentee ballots for specified reasons (e.g., Election Day travel).

But for the 37 states that do provide for some kind of early voting, campaigns need to be acutely aware that the chance to reach some voters ends not on “Election Day” but when they happen to fill out mail or absentee ballots or take advantage of in-person early-voting opportunities. And as Healy points out, that’s where Hillary Clinton’s undisputed organizational advantage over Donald Trump could begin to become crucial earlier rather than later — as early as September 23, when early voting begins in Minnesota and South Dakota.

Team Clinton is building on the Obama campaign’s highly sophisticated system for “banking” early votes

Even though the writer is a Hillary Democrat I did not add a 'Barf Alert' to the title, because it is an important point that Early voting will play a big factor in whether Trump wins.

"Before joining New York, Kilgore was the principal blogger for the Washington Monthly, a weekly columnist for Talking Points Memo, and managing editor for the Democratic Strategist. He was previously a regular contributor on politics and elections to The New Republic and FiveThirtyEight and a senior fellow at the Progressive Policy Institute. Earlier in his career, Kilgore was policy director for the Democratic Leadership Council, communications director for U.S. Senator Sam Nunn, and a speechwriter and federal-state relations liaison for three governors of his home state of Georgia."

Turnout, not early voting, will be the key. It doesn’t matter when they vote, it matters that they vote.

He’s already ahead Ed Kilgore...Unless Hillary can get at least as many votes as OBAMA got in 2008 she is screwed!

Hillary is already stuffing ballot boxes with bogus absentee ballots in the swing states, which is why all the rigged polls are so high for her. That is cover for her fraudulent vote totals later. She will be an illegitimate president, hated by millions more than Obama is now.

We should have gone back to one day voting with picture ID and having voters put their thumb in red dye at the voting site. The dead have no thumbs.

Mr. Kilgore...Early voting doesn’t begin until Sept 23rd...

Do you honestly think Trump is not going to do or present anything before then???

Are you really that naive???

Another uplifting thread!

It’s almost as depressing here as it is on CNN and MSNBC. I think I need a break from FR.

Who needs the MSM when I can come here for nonstop doom and gloom.

Early voting should be eliminated.
In Virginia, to get an absentee ballot, you have to provide a reason why you can’t vote on election day.
The way it should be nationwide.

Come on people! I know that early voting is in their favor because they don’t work! We can take advantage also!

“How does one comeback when they are ahead?”

Kilgore is just parroting the GOPe party line, with the cooperation of media that Trump is behind and can’t possibly win.

These lemmings are going to soil themselves when they see the shape of the early voting. I live in Massachusetts, and in my travels have seen many Trump lawn signs and bumper stickers. I still have not seen a Hillary sign or sticker. Not one.

Any other FReepers seeing anything similar to here in the Gulagwealth?

I think you're wrong. Look at some numbers: First, there are four candidates, not two. But for a moment let's do a two-way race. In 2012, about 127m people voted.

Cankles can win if she gets just a few more than Minion did in 2012, namely if she gets 60m (but I don't think she can do that).

Trump can win easily with 60m+.

Figure: 30m R primary voters. Say 15% are neverTrump Cruzoids, so Trump gets 85% of 30m, or 25.5m.

Now assume that each of those brings one other person to the dance. Not a stretch at all---parents, children, spouses, a friend or two: 85% of 30m=25.5m or 51m right there.

Now assume that Trump gets a 10% lead among independents, for 55-45% split. I figure about 15m will be independents, so 8.2m or right at 60m. (I'm lumping undecideds in here).

Cankles/Dinobernie had 27m vote in the primary. Say Cankles gets 90% turnout (I don't buy it for a minute, but for argument's sake): 24.3m, and double that in my formula above for 48.6m plus her 45% share of m or 6.7m for a total of 55.3m.

Now, lets assume that Johnson gets his 10% and that it comes evenly from each, then Trump falls to 54m, Cankles to 50m. Stein takes 3% almost exclusively from Cankles, though, or another 1.6m off her total for 48.7m.

You can see that a very, very slight uptick in Trump's Republican support can push him to about 60m; a very slightly larger gap among indies can possibly get him over.

I don't see, given the Dem primary numbers, how Cankles in ANY scenario can get above about 55m votes.

All, please take a look at my numbers here. What am I missing? (The 55-45 Trump edge in indies is validated in most polls, although perhaps some of the more recent fraudulent polls have it a little closer).

If I have something really off, I’ll fix it. Obviously, no one expects HIGHER turnout than in 2012. If it is higher, I think it would almost certainly be an advantage to Trump.
