mesmerism - dating back to 18th century Franz Anton Mesmer

I believe mesmerism was originally practiced by Mesmer passing his hands over the body of a subject in a pattern. It was believed by Mesmer that this pattern was displacing or redirecting magnetic fields, not that the subject was fascinated by the hand movement.

"Mesmerism" is one of the many words in English that comes from a person's name, in this case Franz Mesmer. Chauvinism, the 70s buzzword for alleged sexism, is another example, plus more recent examples of calling someone a quisling, or for that matter referring to receiving oral sex as getting Lewinskyed.

Well, ya see, in today’s world, only liberals are allowed to claim they are merciful and compassionate - although their actual actions destroy the ones whom they claim are “helping” ... Conservatives, by definition, are hate-filled and racist. Right?
