Very nice.

I sure hope you’re not feeding them that commercial colored water. That will kill them. Food coloring is not in nature.

The formula for feeding hummers:

1 part sugar (1 cup)

4 parts water (4 cups)

I apologize if I have offended, just wanted to make sure you’all don’t kill them in the process.

Thx. I'll make sure my brother knows this.

He's an animal lover and I know he wouldn't want to get it wrong.

well those moths are pretty fascinating too. One of the little notes at the hummingbird hawk moth site said “A swarm of them were seen flying across the English Channel on D-Day”

Where are you — it says common from Portugal to Japan.

Incredible. How lucky you are.

I have a cousin (animal lover) who has a wild hummingbird living in her yard who will perch on her hand.

All I have is a mockingbird, a bunch of cats, some raccoons, some possums, and a pet skink (living in the tiny courtyard).;-)

Oh, and I feed the birds sunflower seed in the morning. Make them hunt insects in the afternoon.

Are there no native hummingbird species in your region? If there are, put out a few feeders, plant some red flowers. They’ll find you.

The ones I have seen around here feed during the day. I thought the idea was to mimic a hummingbird, and hummingbirds feed during the day.

We have only had brown ones this year. We have what looks like two baby birds and the male and female. A few years back my wife had two different color green ones and their baby birds plus a lot of brown ones. We don’t get the color variety as most folks out west do.

Might be a little late to attract them, you’ll likely have success when they return in the spring.

The wife also has quite a following among the local deer population. Here she is conversing with one of her favorites, Bambi.

I love to follow dear Bambi.

I have held a few in my hands over the years. Your eyes see you are holding something. You feel something in your hand. But it’s like they weigh nothing. Like you are not holding anything.

Beautiful.

I have held many birds over the years. Usually those trapped on the screen porch.

They are so delicate and slight.

They seem to know that I am trying to help.

Never lost one.

I’ve cut down the 1 cup to 1/2 cup, not as many hummingbirds that way, but that’s okay as I would be changing their sweet water everyday. Here is an interesting story: A few years ago we would find dead hummingbirds at the foot of the feeders. Couldn’t figure it out, until we saw a preying mantis sitting on the feeder, clutching a hummingbird around the neck, sucking on its head. Mantis feed on hummingbirds that way and then discard whats left. We don’t leave the feeders up past Labor Day, so now the Mantis aren’t big enough to catch their prey.

Sorry, but you should not cut the sugar content. This has been researched and published many times on the internet.

Again, I apologize if I offend, but if you’re not going to do it right, then don’t feed them at all.

I’ve heard about the praying mantis problem, and thank God, I have never had that happen in my yard.
