A vegan restaurant with a pay what you can policy is facing closure after receiving an average of $3 per meal from customers. For the last two years, Lentil As Anything in Sydneys trendy inner-city Newtown has prided itself both on serving restaurant quality vegan food while retaining its not for profit, community organisation philosophy.

That is Ted Turner’s joint.
What business plan!
Bernie Sanders dinners?
Vegan? Lentils?...that’s animal feed - pig food for making tasty bacon. I wouldn’t eat at that restaurant. Maybe the $3 average that people paid was a fair measure of the value people place on vegan “food”.
I looked at the picture at the link, lots of idealistic little twits.
Hopefully they learned something about how the world really works.
Let me guess, the servers also bitched about any tips that were less than $5...
The article pictures a staff of ~25, some volunteers, others paid. Weekly (weekly!) operating costs of $23,000, including rent of $2,700 per week! Don’t know if that’s US or Australian dollars, but very high for a run of the mill eatery. Obviously their business plan is AFU, if they even had one. Capitalism feeds people, Socialism starves people.
Anyone who’s a fan of The Young Ones chuckles whenever they hear “lentils”.So vegans not only look like concentration camp survivors but they’re also cheap ********!
But people are taking advantage of what were doing here and forget about how we run, and the fact that we need support.
27 workers, 2 customers, what could possibly go wrong?
That is exactly the example I use all the time. And for the same reason. Nice. :-)
What a great business plan! Expecting people to go full Esau and give up their birthright for a bowl of lentil soup
Actually I think the Australian dollar is 5 to 1 to US!
Gee. Who’d a thunk!? People are cheap bastards when they can get away with it. Color me surprised.
Not just Socialism, but Vegan, you watch any of the cooking contest on food network and the Vegan cookers are the first to go. Not every one can eat SOY I don’t care how you dress it up with seasonings it is still not edible for people with Thyroid issues. No more than all those fruits and veggies are for those with Gastropresis or other GI health issues we can’t digest the stuff.
Looked up the current exchange rate: 1 USD = 1.313 AUD. Even factoring the cheaper AUD, the weekly operating costs are way too high.
What a unique business model...I can’t believe it failed. Pay what you want, what could go wrong?
Welcome to FR. I think you’re fitting in nicely.
If they would put a nice cut of meat on the plate, folks might pay more. $3 sounds about right for lentil soup or lentil mush.
Red Ted is just a commie with your money, not his.
