Colin Kaepernicks decision not to stand during the playing of the The Star-Spangled Banner has had a ripple effect across the sports world in the past week. It has elicited reactions both in support and in condemnation from players around the NFL and beyond, military members and even President Obama. A prominent name from professional hockey added his opinion to the mix Tuesday, and it wasnt in favor of Kaepernicks social justice protest.
If any of my players sit on the bench for the national anthem, they will sit there the rest of the game, USA Hockey Coach John Tortorella told ESPNs Linda Cohn ahead of the World Cup of Hockey.

Tortorella, who coaches the Columbus Blue Jackets during the NHL season, has a son, Nick, who is a member of the Army Rangers, and he has reportedly spoken often with his players in Toronto about representing America as national team members.
I know these are hockey games but I do look at it like its for my country, Tortorella said (via the Columbus Dispatch). What Nick is doing by far dwarfs what we do. Were entertainers; were playing a sport.
But with my son over there this might sound selfish I want to team up with him and help my country, Tortorella continued. I get pretty caught up in representing my country. Theres nothing like it.
If the BLM/SJW crowd finds out about this, he could be in trouble. Hmm.
Hockey players are generally down-to-Earth folks. You don’t hear about this social justice BS in the ranks of the NHL. At least not publicly...
And that’s the truth!
Hockey players are generally white foreigners. They do get involved in pushing political agendas in America (homosexuality to kids, enviro-weeie stuff) but the BLM kind of stuff probably isn’t going to be one of them.
Given the general perception in Canada and Europe of America as a rascist country, I wouldn’t be surprised to find that most support the actions of Kaepernick.
Two people who sang the national anthems with passion: Kate Smith in Philadelphia and Roger Doucet in Montreal.

The NHL is the NBA for white guys.
Kate was indeed awesome and did lead the Flyers to the Stanley Cup, but God Bless America is not our National Anthem.
National Honkey League
The last coach I can remember who fit that description was named Herb Brooks. Go figure.
The NHL is filled with a mix of players from a bunch of different countries. For all the grief a lot of these countries get from conservatives here in the U.S., it’s worth noting that these players take their national teams seriously in tournaments like this.

I don’t care who you are!
That, RIGHT THERE, is funny!
When he was the coach of the Virginia Lancers, there was an attractive woman who would sit behind his bench in Winston Salem. She annoyed the heck out of him. People started referring to her as “his ex-wife”. She would lean over the glass, say something to him and he would lose it.
The Virginia players had to stifle their laughter.
Herb Brooks used to coach around here, not even close.
Brooks and Tortorella have a lot of similarities. Brooks was a tremendous coach of amateur teams but could never cut it in the NHL because his prickly personality drove him out of every NHL job he held.
Tortorella has coached a Stanley Cup champion, at least. That's something Brooks never did.
