For Dina Kaplan, Labor Day weekend means camping out in the Nevada desert among 60,000 of her newly minted besties, finding her Zen among sunrise meditation sessions, outrageous costumes and a commitment to human decency at the annual, anything-goes Burning Man festival.
They give you water if youre thirsty and feed you if youre hungry, says Kaplan, a five-time veteran of the festival and a West Village-based entrepreneur and yoga enthusiast who declines to give her age. Some people will dance for 18 straight hours.
But today, shes finding it difficult to readjust to the real world as she returns to life in NYC.
You have cars honking at you, subway doors closing on you, and peoples MO is to serve themselves and not you. Its very harsh its very hard to leave Burning Man, says Kaplan.
Whod ever think that joining a self-sufficient outdoor camp, using baby wipes as a pseudoshower for a week and, for some, taking copious amounts of drugs would be so hard to give up?
A number of New Yorkers, dissatisfied with their lives, flee westward every year for the weeklong festival known for its constant hugs and no-money mandate. But upon their return, many are experiencing palpable withdrawal symptoms as the transition proves tough for those who continue to see the mirage of Burning Man, even when back in Manhattan.

Why doesn;t she get a one way ticket to Cuba.....
It’s more like an attitude of mutual serving.
And with respect to this, the observant Christian can bring forth quite an illustration.
There are Free Republicans who believe cities should be outlawed!
I’m connected to a theater company that goes to Burning Man every year. They do a show every night after the sun goes down but seem to come back mentally intact and clean.
As for me and my house, the money that I could have wasted in the desert, has instead gone to such places as Salvation Army, my church and Hillsdale College! I am not claiming any special goodness here but rather I am merely following the good examples from my parents and good teachers.
My point is that so long as we allow our attention to be polluted by these excesses AND have the consistent and insistent denigration of normal and moral behavior, we are unlikely to be able to improve our behaviors at the society level!
No light bulb. Just an angry vein popping from her forehead for even thinking this should include her.
Liberal baby boomers who can’t grow up and think of anyone other than themselves...
I say we expand Burning Man to an all-year event. Advertise it heavily in the Blue States and among liberal populations. Even have a government subsidy for them to get there and buy drugs while attending. If we could get them to go and stay there, the country would be a much better place, even taking into account the cost of the subsidy.
“Forget Burning Man. Go to Man Hung On A Cross.”
Thanks for my new Tagline, Redneck! :-)
Boo hoo, she can get laid in NYC too.
“After living in the country I don’t care if I EVER see a big city again.”
This X 1000.
Good words. Our group that went to World Youth Day in Krakow Poland at the end of July had a “reunion” at the parish last week to share their experience with those that did not attend the event. There was joy, praise and worship. No complaining or whining. Makes a difference if Christ is the center of one’s life. Funny that a million teen and young adult Catholics can meet for 5 days with no issues and get hardly any press but 60,000 attend a pagan event and it makes the front pages for days.
There are still an awful lot of them around.
There was an article posted a while back about some bimbo....I mean burner...who spent upwards of $40k on wardrobe, liposuction, personal trainer, etc., getting ready for Burning Man. Free spirits shunning money and material possessions my eye! Just a dress up (or walk around naked) party for rich liberals.
Templehof?
“My sister in law believes that we should always be in loin cloth, no money, drug filled mode.”
If Burning ran out of water and gas their peace and love crap would evaporate pretty darn fast. Pretty easy to be back to nature until you’re stranded in the desert.
