The Debate Was A Wash
me ^ | 27/09/2016 | Viennacon

I watched the debate, and felt it was unlikely to move the needle in any direction.

Contrary to what idiots on TV are saying, I thought the first segment was Trump's weakest. Mainly because she nailed him on the tax returns. He had no good answer there, and it showed.

He did get more irate in the second two, but he landed solid blows. Law and order. He mentioned the thousands dead in black locales, and she says everything is fine and vibrant? What was she thinking?

The third section was close to a tie, but I think Trump won that by a hair.

Trump missed big opportunities, mainly on the cybersecurity stuff, but he kept hitting the heartlands, mentioning critical states. Hillary did not mention Ohio, Michigan, PA once in the entire debate. How will this play with average joes?

They both largely failed to do what they were supposed to do. Trump had to keep his cool and have a decent response to all lines of attack. He didn't. Hillary had to connect with voters and not seem like a rich mannequin. She didn't.

After the debate, NBC of all networks had someone on who said the debate was unlikely to change many minds. I think that's true, and given the current state of the race, its good news for Trump. I hope he can perform better next time.

People trying to paint this as Romney's second debate are morons. Trump did much better than that.

Agreed. Both sides needed a major gaff from the other. Neither side obliged.

I disagree.

Lester Holt and Hillary Clinton tag teamed Trump throughout the debate. It appeared that Clinton had the questions in advance and gave memorized scripted responses to questions.
Holt regularly interrupted and contradicted Trump. He also set up Trump for scripted Clinton attacks.

Hillary did not get a single question about her server, her emails, the Clinton foundation or her many foreign policy failures. Trump was continually asked hostile questions.

Despite all this Trump did well.

Trump came off as honest and genuine. He understood the problems with the economy and national security. Clinton came off as scripted and phony. Clinton seemed like she was reciting memorized talking points with no relation to her record.

Trump came off as genuine, a real person. Clinton came off as scripted and artificial.

Trump won.

I thought Trump started very strong, flagged in the middle, and then came back at the end. He missed some opportunities.
Clinton knew her stuff, and at times got under Trump's skin, but she was not likable at all. I would say a narrow Trump win or a Draw.

I was joking to someone last night...

Half the people tuned in to see Trump morph into Hitler, and the other half tuned in to see Clinton stroke out and faceplant into the podium.

Neither happened.

I voted in all the polls for him winning but Trump did leave too much on the table. He should have said she started the birther movement. Should have come back on Benghazi, the emails and especially her guessing all over the board about his taxes. BTW, I don’t care about any of their taxes.

She addressed him as Donald vs. Him addressing her as SOS. While he may have been doing that out of respect, he shouldn’t put up with that next time.

This morning I wrote the following to a friend who was a little disappointed in Donald Trump's performance last night:

Once it became apparent early on that Clinton was going to be able to deal with her physical and mental issues at least for the duration of the debate, I listened more than watched ... I've found that by watching I miss a lot of the content.

Clinton sounded robotic; just repeating her canned (and well-rehearsed) responses ... and she had a lot of help from Holt. Several times all she had to do was stand there and say nothing while Holt carried the water for her.

Despite not bringing up a few heavy points (Benghazi; Clinton Foundation; Clinton's mysogeny), and a little weak in some of his responses -- but certainly not all -- my conclusion is that while Trump could have done more to come across as a leader -- to build a greater distinction between his successes and leadership skills to Clinton's poor record and long-time criminal activities -- I don't think he hurt himself in the debate. But I can't shake this feeling of mild disappointment in his performance ... I didn't hear the "fire in the belly" I've come to expect from Trump.

Yet, with two debates to go (and I expect Mike Pence will excel against a far weaker opponent in the VP debate), I fully expect Trump to come out swinging for the fences in the next two. From her performance last night, Clinton may have succeeded in convincing some people that she is not as sick as she has let on (although I suspect she is that sick!), Trump may be lulling her into a sense of complacency ... that he's not quite the challenge she once thought he was. But there's blood in the water and Clinton is a shark -- a sick and morally bankrupt shark -- but a shark nonetheless. And there's a lot of grifters, parasites and people who have no idea of the horrors of socialism out there who will vote for her.

So while Trump can legitimately claim victory -- whatever that means from a single one-on-one debate -- he must unleash his passions and not be so timid with her from here on out ... especially in the next debate. He can come across as a statesman while being ruthless toward this latest "obama" at the same time. And he must use the general malaise if not outright contempt for Clinton that appears to permeate the voters ... all voters.

so many important issues like obamacare, terrorism, economy, her lying, her server, her foundation, her emails, Benghazi , lying to families who lost loved ones, etc etc etc and yet the questions were about tax releases, birther, and if he supported the Iraq war, and then brings up a law suit from the 70’s

IT WAS A JOKE!

Holt should be ashamed of himself, and yet he did another Candy Crowley moment.

It is not mandatory or a requirement to release tax forms...

As Trump said, tax forms do not show you a lot except that you either pay taxes or do not...If you don’t, the IRS will seize them...

Clinton said that all past presidents and candidates have released their tax forms...So what???

Only place where Trump lost was in newsrooms silent majority: 14 polls & 3.41 million votes Trump got 70% media wrong again. A wash?

Right after it ended, a talking head said she was reading off notes. IOW, the cheater knew the questions ahead of time.

Lester was Team Hellary the whole night and made it so obvious a 3 year old could see it. When they weren’t tag teaming, he was checked out allowing them to argue. Zero moderating skills.

If the MSM doesn’t talk about a bounce for either of them this week then you know Trump got the bounce. If Hillary gets any kind of bounce they will be all over it.

I don't think either came off well. Trump looked unprepared and at sea at times - repeating catch phrases and ocassionally talking straight nonsense ("you've been fighting ISIS for your entire adult life" "bigly"). Hillary was condescending and spewed the meaningless platitudes dimwits eat up. She gained no ground on likeability but that's a lost cause.

Hillary's make-up artist won the night. She looked better (on the Hillary scale) than she's looked in years. And the night's drug cocktail kept her awake and relatively snappy (again, on the Hillary scale).

Real world events will move the election far more and those continue to break Trumps way, which means continuous bad news. Hillary made the case that she will continue to move the country forward in the same direction we've been going for the last 25 years. Those happy with that direction will break for her, those unhappy with it will break for Trump.

I agree - Trump is on the path of Romney. The debate is no time to be bragging.......again. Please stop and have some intelligent facts at hand. You were whipped by Hillary last night and I am a die-hard Conservative saying it, not like some. This is too important! Go in prepared with facts that can be checked out and proven correct. Be ready for these attacks, and you should know what they are, so you can report needed information only with nothing else like blah, blah, blah. Trump appeared to me to be too unprepared and needs to get some education from others on what is actually going on in this world and government. We cannot have another eight years of the destruction of our country and it’s values. PLEASE; we are counting on you. You are not presidential at all Trump!!!

I honestly don’t think we’ll see any bouncing. You’re telling me that blue collar workers in Ohio after last night’s debate are going to say “wow! Hillary really offered me a reason to vote for her!”

I noted also that Hillary kept calling him Donald and not Mr. Trump, but Trump called her Secretary Clinton in all but one case. I am sure that was intended to demean him. But it seemed very unprofessional in a debate.

Also, it seemed as if she could not hide her smirking although she tried. She came across to me as very superior to us mere mortals.

Write to Trump to let him know all this above. Might not hurt, and could help. Hopefully somebody will read and inform him.
