I once attended a talk given by Brian Jacques, author of the Redwall book series. He mentioned traveling throughout England and described various regional accents and differences from one small town to another. Even he had a hard time understanding (he was from Liverpool).

No. Really. Anthony is pronounced with a hard T, not the TH sound. And is still spelled with the TH.

From my cold dead tongue...

Linguists track the changes in language, not dictate change.

Presumptuous MORONS!

Can we just adopt ebonics and save time?

Fahrenheit 451 Great book, time to re-read it.

Incidentally: we just outlined two very good reasons why the “th” sound will NOT disappear ... both Monty Python and Looney Tunes ... not to mention jokes about all speech impediments ... would have to disappear before people forgot how to make the sound!

Aren’t Anthony and Antony two distinctly different names?

Since schools and colleges are ashamed of American culture, and since English is part of the culture, no surprise that English is not taught right, and anything goes.

So Brits are going to start talking like New Yorkers? Irish immigrants couldn’t pronounce the ‘th’ which is why New Yorkers used to say ‘turty-turd-and-turd” rather than thirty third and third. But that changed over the years and it’s rare to hear that accent anymore.

Actually, its: "toidy-toid and toid." As in:

Toidy doity poiple boids
sittin' a coib, choipin' and boipin' and eatin' woims
Along came Hoibie and his goil Goitie, da goil wit da golden coils.
When dey saw da toidy doity poiple boids
sittin' da coib, choipin' abd boipin' and eatin' woims,
Dey was patoibed.

“Linguists have also predicted that the future direction of English will be determined in India, simply by the sheer number of speakers.”

Nonsense, because there is little direct contact between Indian English speakers and other English speakers

Sure, but I don’t think it’s ever pronounced with a “thom” sound. Not that I’ve ever heard.
