In a hail of gunfire, Conroe jewelry store owner Jeffery Turner Jr. made the decision to shoot back – with his AK-47 rifle – at four men who opened fire on his customers and staff during an attempted robbery Monday afternoon.

In the aftermath of the bullet spray, one robber lay dead in the doorway among shattered glass; while Turner, his employees and customers were left shaken but unharmed.

The three other robbers fled the scene in the Conroe West strip center in the 4800 block of Texas 105 West.

“You always have a right to defend yourself, especially when the robber shoots at you,” said Turner’s attorney E. Tay Bond, who said all the witnesses and Turner reported the four men started shooting first. “Jeff does keep an AK-47 for defense purposes.”

In TX we understand that some people just need killing.

Same here, and I suspect same in NY, NJ, etc. too. That's probably why those states passed the retreat laws - to protect the felon, illegal aliens, etc who make up the democrat party voters. After all criminals are no threat to the government, only to honest citizens, and who cares about them?

>>Welcome to Texas.<<

Express lane to capital punishment. These were probably the same crooks that smashed the jewelry cases in an upscale part of Houston a couple of weeks ago. Caught on camera, at least four men entered a jewelry store and began smashing cases with hammers, grabbing everything they could before fleeing.

This time, they picked the wrong store.

“You did see he was using an AK, right? AKs are not exactly known for accuracy... :P”

Yeah, those old AKs aren’t as accurate as they used to be at 30 feet or less!

AKs were meant for street fighting (see the Battle of Berlin) or to be fired from inside an APC rolling across the Fulda Gap. They have a short length of pull and the gas block is right in the middle of the barrel, sometimes inducing some harmonics that make accurate rapid fire challenging at 200 meters and beyond.

That said, The AK has proven to be quite adaptable and is an excellent means of discouraging multiple attackers - especially as in this case, at across the counter ranges.

Not in the following states. You would not be authorized to use deadly force in self defense without "retreating". The following states impose some form of duty to retreat before using deadly self defense:
•Arkansas

Not entirely true. True we do have a "retreat" clause in our lawful deadly physical force law, but you have to read the entire law that adds an affirmative defense of "retreat with complete safety" and some exemptions:

Our lawyers say that planting your foot back as you brace, draw your firearm, and assume a shooting stance is about as much retreat needed because you can't outrun a bullet. NO ONE has been prosecuted since the 60s or 70s on our retreat clause and we have 2 AG letters (recommendations to the 75 county prosecutors) NOT to charge on retreat portion of § 5-2-607.

SOURCE: (b) A person may not use deadly physical force in self-defense if the person knows that he or she can avoid the necessity of using deadly physical force with complete safety:

(1) (A) By retreating.

(B) However, a person is not required to retreat if the person is:

(i) In the person's dwelling or on the curtilage surrounding the person's dwelling and was not the original aggressor; or

(ii) A law enforcement officer or a person assisting at the direction of a law enforcement officer; or

(2) By surrendering possession of property to a person claiming a lawful right to possession of the property.

The last one pretty much exonerates the jewelry store owner. We are like AZ, OK and TX " light" on self defense in AR.

Arkansas ... True we do have a "retreat" clause

What I said. I didn't look at the various flavors of retreat clause or how it was implemented. I was just listing those that had one.

Depends on which AK he was using, honestly. Short or long barrel, what sights, etc. Some AKs I’ve seen are pretty damn miserable even at close range.

The ranges here can't be more than 20 yards. Let's say AK accuracy is a miserable 4 MOA (4" at 100 yards). That's 4/5" at 20 yards. That means a dispersal pattern of less than a inch for shots fire.

Plenty accurate for CQB.

If I remember my history, “Duty To Retreat” laws were passed to prevent blacks from shooting back at night riders attacking their house.

Like all bad laws, when the Liberals got into government, they decided such laws applied to all citizens.

The Sullivan Act - the first gun control legislation in the US was passed in NY to protect Irish gangsters from shopkeepers and vendors.
Sullivan was about as corrupt as human being could get...

And NY politicians have only lowered the bar since then.

I think he was hoping to use the thugs as the backstop to stop the bullets. Once the thugs opened fire in the store the owner tried to put an end to the threat. I'm surprised he didn't have a handgun instead of the AK 47.

•New Jersey (the home of anti-gun rino fat boy Christie)

Unfair. He supported loosening of gun restrictions, but the RAT dominated legislature would not hear of it.

The "scary" factor comes into play, choking up the assailant.

Unfair

Not at all - he only got religion on guns when he started considering running for president.

New Jersey is considered to be the third-worst state for gun owners, according to Guns & Ammo

The National Rifle Association (NRA), which has given Christie a "C" rating in protecting the rights of gun owners, pointedly did not invite him to address their annual convention in Nashville, while other leading GOP candidates invited to speak, like former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, all have received "A+" NRA ratings, New Jersey.com said.

Christie's "C" rating is "like an 'F' to most Republicans," Doug Brinkley, Rice University presidential historian
