Posted on 10/21/2016 6:52:14 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

We’re planting garlic this weekend. I’ll be using a ground mesh also, as the burrowing rodents around here are horrific.

This time of year the skunks and raccoons do a lot of digging for worms and grubs. Normally I pin down floating row cover netting until the roots are established and then take them off. I have managed to trap all the moles and eliminated them for now. I planted 2 sweet potatoes with common vetch but I see I have two Yukon gold potatoes coming up as volunteers …

What state are you located in? We’re in Michigan and it’s cold enough to put a layer of straw down over the planted garlic bulbs until early spring.

Get your self a good old-fashioned hot water bottle. I have one with a flannel cover. It helps soooo much when there is a storm coming in, and in the winter time.

I can’t praise this thing enough. Lay it on top of, sit on it, lay on it, hold it on a painful spot. Just adjust the amount of water and it is easier to “form” it the best way to relieve pain and stiffness/soreness.

Here in Delaware, weather is just turning cold. Taking down fencing on the old garden, bed by bed. Tomatoes are done. String beans are down to to 1 or 2 a day. Lots of bell peppers this year. Amazed at the row of asparagus!

The new garden is a mess, except for the wife’s herbs. Learned a lot, though. There are more deer around our subdivision than I thought. And they love eggplants. Know what cabbage worms are; saw them eating my broccoli plants. I can’t grow squash for love nor money. Lots of work to do before winter and again before spring planting.

Question: I’ve got some bags of fertilizer with same ratios (6-6-6, 10-10-10, 4-4-4). Okay to mix?

I still have about 15-18 tomatoes going. About 4 new baby ones that just started - even in the cooler weather - real cool.

Hope the frost holds off. I have a brown pepper(?) out there with my purple and green (one green is now 40% yellow).

Transplanted some carrots - some little tiny ones and a few that were trying. I’m giving them a few more weeks. Maybe can harvest some for Thanksgiving and freeze some for Christmas. Still, I think I’ll be chopping some very small carrots but a lot of them.

Also have 5 tomatoes almost ripe or ripe plus one green one that will be sitting indoors for awhile. He fell off the Better Boy I think so we’ll see.

Not much happening here garden wise. Keeping a close eye on weather reports in case I have to cover the plants because of temperatures.

Thanks and Amen to the bed! I put a heating pad near my feet the last 2 nights. Flannel sheets come next - today. In a couple of weeks we'll switch to our heavy down comforter.
It's a vey big patio for the lettuce. This is how I start it in the spring and then transplant. Have not tried it in the fall before. I will have to pick those peppers today though and dump the pot.

I would say OK to mix those bags, you’ll have a nice blend out of it.

I picked a five gallon bucket of peppers last week and made three tomato/pepper casseroles. Cooked all three and froze two. More peppers on still coming.

Upstate New York Update:

It’s been a rough year; Gram fell and broke her hip, and I’ve been spending a good amount of time at the bedside while she recovers (the poor thing is coming along nicely though, so all is well). As a result, this year my garden went for months without much tending.

Was able to salvage some green peppers, some plum tomatoes that I somehow find time to core and peel and make into sauce, and a BUMPER CROP of habenero peppers (12 plants worth! holy smoke!).

Hopefully next year life won’t intrude too much and I’ll have more time to spend on the backyard.

Gramas have a habit of falling. Hopes for a speedy recovery.

We put in four jalapeño plants and have had “poppers” four or five times. These are cream cheese & mayo stuffed jalapeños wrapped in bacon. I soak the cored peppers over night in salty water to cut the heat down a bit. I cover about 20 of these in tin foil for 30 minutes and uncover for another 10.
YUM !

My tomato plants are so full of green tomatoes that I’m hoping for one of our rare December first frosts. Probably not realistic but nothing below 47 on my 15 day forecast. The 47 degree prediction was actually for this morning and I brought my lemon tree in last night for the first time. I think they do those forecasts for the cities and towns. We tend to get a little chillier out in the country on a hilltop and I don’t want to lose my first lemon crop to that. LOL

Anybody here who can tell me about what temp I ought to bring in a bouganvilla?

Amen, that was beautifully stated. Adversity in the past few years has caused me so much joy in the days that are good, that I think I even appreciate and enjoy difficult days more than in my younger years. But tbe words you strung together explain it better.
