Abner J. Mikva has always been something of a talent scout, and Elena Kagan was one of his best picks.
He hired her as a law clerk while serving on a federal appeals court in Washington. He recommended her for a Supreme Court clerkship for Justice Thurgood Marshall (“If she suits you, she’ll suit me,” the justice said). After that, Judge Mikva promoted her again, for a professor’s berth at the University of Chicago. Then he wooed her away to join him in the Clinton White House.
I’ve gone there a couple of times just to see what it was all about. The language of so many people over there is so filthy, I came away feeling dirty. No more.
