Hope you enjoy.Take Five
music *ping*
Got to see DBQuartet in about 69, before Desmond died. Joe Morello was mind bogglingly good
Great song! One of my favorite renditions of Take Five is by a couple of home schooled boys.

Dave Brubeck was a friend of my Dad’s. I remember back in ‘59 or ‘60, Mr. Brubeck stopped in to see my dad at our home in Hampton, Va. My dad knew Dave from college, when they both earned extra cash as members of a weekend swing-band.
My dad, Dave and 2 band members played “Take Five” in our living room.
Very cool.
Such a good call by you. If I click on that tune I’ll listen to jazz all day and I’ve got work to do!
His legacy goes far beyond him. His son Darius (named after Darius Milhaud, one of Brubeck's teachers, whom Dave met when he was stationed in France with Patton) went to South Africa and taught for about 20 years at KwaZulu-Natal University when apartheid was crumbling. One of his students, Pamela de Menezes Myburgh, is making a name for herself in European jazz/pop as the vocals for Shotgun Fakes, which includes her husband Stefan. Here is a recording of them with SA rapper Ricky Rik, "Pick Me Up."
Wow! What an incredible memory that must be!
Great story.
I was at the first public performance of Take Five at Loyola University in L.A. (1956 or 1957, can’t remember). We gave them a standing “O” when they finished.
Dave Brubeck’s ethereal solos have always been a favorite of mine. Between him and Miles Davis, I can get a jazz fix anytime.
I love so many of his piano solos, but one of my favorites is from “Dave Digs Disney” from the “When You Wish Upon A Star” track:

Man that’s good! Piano player shreds.
“Take Five” was great, but my dad and the band members liked another tune called “The Crazy Otto”, which, to me, sounded like really dreadful “merry go round” music.
Ping to check out some cool Brubeck later.
Truly one of the greatest pieces of American music
She's got a touch of Tuesday Weld...
How did it go learning it?
