Anyone travel to Colombia or Ecuador? Vaccines necessary or not?
CDC says needed for yellow fever, malaria, zika. Anyone have any experience with this?
Where in Colombia and where in Ecuador?
For Bogota or Quito, no.
For the Amazon regions of Colombia of or Ecuador, probably not.
Bogota, Cartagena Medellin Ecuador might have to wait...Colombia first...
And, check the State Dept. website. Some countries require you to have certain vaccines -- if you have recently been in at-risk areas.
If you are sticking to metropolitan areas and not going into the jungle, the list of necessary vaccines is much shorter.
Staying in the cities...just wondering if cdc is being overly cautious. Mi knew a couple who traveled Central America a lot and didn’t get any special shots....but I don’t want to get the zika...

There is no vaccine to prevent Zika. Just mosquito avoidance.

Do not get vaccinated unless mandatory.
Personally for me, if a vaccine is required, the trip is not. I am not fond of biological Russian Roulette.

Depends on where in Colombia. Bogotá at 8600 feet, bring your own O2 but don’t sweat the mosquitoes. Cali or Medellin at 4000 to 5000 feet maybe. Cartagena on the coast or anywhere down south, watch the bugs. They’re mean.

I have traveled to South America extensively and have never taken a vaccine for my trips. What was right for me though, may not be right for you.
If you are considering vaccination, research each vaccine. Get independent info on risks, benefits and efficacy. Ask your doctor to give you a photocopy of the inserts. Don’t just read the CDC and drug company info though. Neil Z Miller has several books on vaccines which have links to studies. Check out his Vaccine Safety Manual.
Some vaccines *might* be mandatory in certain areas of certain countries (yellow fever?).
With respect to malaria, if it were me, I would ask my doctor to give me antibiotics (doxycycline) in advance of the trip; I would far rather take that, than say some of the stronger stuff like Larium. But again, that is just me. Also, bring a natural mosquito repellent spray.

Well, this “vaccinophobe” has a graduate science degree.
Hillary Clinton supports the pro-vaccine position. So does Bernie, and most Democrats. They don’t believe that fully grown adults should be allowed to make independent, informed decisions about their own health.
An appeal to authority—one possibly could hold any variety of a PhD. Would be easy to claim relevant training or experience in immunology, etc. How would a non-pertinent specialization apply?
I guess they don’t require you learn logic to get a graduate science degree, if you are resorting to such poor argument.

Also, it may well be true that most Democrats support the “pro-vaccine position”, but so do most Republicans, and most Independents as well, because a majority of people of all stripes happen to hold that position.
Every state in the Union except 3 have some form of religious or conscience exemption to vaccination (the only meaningful kind, since medical exemptions are almost impossible to obtain).
It isn’t about what the socialists believe, it is that they believe that the power of the state should be used to force invasive non-emergency medical treatment on every living person in this country.
There are no independently funded, double-blind safety/efficacy studies of vaccines, or their ingredients.
