Question: Did anyone here attend est training?
YouTube ^ | 1970s | Wernehr Erhard

Did anyone here at Free Republic ever attend Erhard Seminars Training, back in the 1970s? Did anyone know another person who did?

If so, do you have any observations to share about the experience? Did it have any lasting influence over you?

Was it just an exercise in groupthink? Erhard certainly seemed to think he was on to something.

Thanks so much for that! I missed the sleazier aspects of Erhard's departure when looking around in the wee hours of this morning.

Not a good guy.

I wonder how he developed the "trainers."

I was a Rolfing model in college. Lying naked on a table and letting these idiots teach others how to painfully massage me supposedly to heal my inner pain. Right. I think it is all a total crock.

I’ve read the Autobiography of Ben Franklin, whom I believe was the most intelligent of all the Founders. His description of his trip from Boston to Philadelphia made a big impression on me, and was one of the reasons why I chose to move to Philadelphia when I was in my twenties.

Rolfing was always kind of a joke. For some reason, I associate it with “Earth Shoes.”

Yeah Denver was a fan. I recall he dedicated his live album or maybe a song from it to him.

Steely, just keep the open talking (interspersed with plenty of silence, too, of course) with your son about what you have figured out from life. They listen. A parent’s words are like water on a rock. Appears to do NOTHING but over time actually shapes the rock.

I had some reel to reel tapes at one time—may still have.

What helped me most was Rational Behavior Therapy as taught by Dr. Maxie C. Maultsby. I did read Albsert Ellis also.

I just remembered something else I suggested he read weekly (he insists I used the word “must” read!). “IF” by Rudyard Kipling.

. . . and the “Whirlwind of Never Ending Pain” kick, which is done by kicking the opponent in the balls repeatedly.

I was taking that same course from Master Jun Wui Sui, but he never explained how you got your opponent the keep standing there while you kicked him in the balls repeatedly. Everyone of my opponents kept running away after my first attempt, or decked me with a round house punch. When I finally cornered Master Jun, he admitted he had the same problem with the "Whirlwind of Never Ending Pain" kick and told me that what one must learn from practicing this discipline is that the Never Ending Pain is one's own!

In fairness, I doubt the allegations against him were true. He spooked some mighty powerful people -- L Ron Hubbard, to name one -- and the evidence seems pretty thin.

I think he put together something that can help people, but none of which is particularly original. It's a lot of ideas borrowed from other schools of thought, then packaged to make a lot of money.

And the thing about not being allowed to use the bathroom is somewhat true. They don't actually forbid it; they just recommend that you don't disrupt the "seminar," which you might do if you get up before the breaks. They also promote it as a learning experience, teaching you that you can discipline yourself to do things you didn't think you could.

Pretty weak, I know. But that was the argument.

John Denver's father piloted the formidable B-58 Hustler to multiple speed records. That thing was powered by four J-79 engines, one of which was enough to drive the F-104 Starfighter to Mach 2.

That was I believe the source of his interest in flying, which interest ultimately resulted in his death.

If I recall correctly, his fatal mishap in an experimental airplane resulted from a poorly-located fuel valve, which would have allowed him to use fuel from a reserve tank when the man supply was exhausted.

As Dirty Harry famously said, "A man's got to know his limitations."

Kind of the exact opposite of the "human potential movement."

I've thought of that too. I wouldn't want anyone I love to be in the military under Obama.

Now things have changed, obviously.

Can the military protect its people from irresponsible CICs? Yes or no will do, details not necessary.

I read Erhard's paperback on EST in the 1970s. Toss it. You're wasting your time with it already.

Your son has already been brainwashed by Higher education to the point that he cannot even figure out what to do with himself. If you haven't helped him before, you can't now.

Five recommendations:

(1) Get a King James Bible. It costs $1 in Dollar Tree stores. Read the Gospel of John through, and read the Book of Proverbs, 1 chapter per day from now on, every day. Tell him to do the same.

(2) Throw out all your psychology and all your selfish-help books-they're all just timewasters.

(3) Learn these ABCs until it becomes a part of your life: (A) Actions arise from (B) beliefs, and they have (C) consequences. Nothing can help one better than to have the right beliefs.

(4) Tell him the United States Marine Corps, and serve out at least one hitch. You can't find a finer character-transformer outside of the Bible.

(5) Place him in God's hands and let go of him. Pray, and if you cannot, cry.

I don’t see how they are the CIC. Anything else could be viewed as insubordination or worse.

It’s our job the voters to properly select CICs for the job. With 47%+ being Low-Info & gimmiedats its almost a losing battle. Maybe a successful Trump administration will change that.
