Well said.

And it pains me to see how many people who consider themselves conservative see no problem with all of the shacking up that is prevalent in our culture today.

If a man chooses his wife because she’s beautiful or pretty, because it’s time, because he feels like getting married, because somebody’s pushing him to get married, or any of another hundred reasons, instead of the fact that he wants a lifetime with this woman Then he gets what he gets! You sound like a guy who chose for the wrong reasons and got burned. Maybe you’re not maybe you’re someone who chose for a lifetime and your mate betrayed you, that happens too. But I will tell you why my husband married me, he married me because we have like values because my character was strong and Christian, because I had been through the fire and came out better than when I went in. And he loved me. And I adore him. If he ever leaves me, I’ll be in the next room packing to go with him!!

What is marriage? What is the purpose of marriage? What does it mean?

Simple… Marriage is the institution created by God which allows mankind to realize and fulfill the sexual component of their humanity in the only way that He approves.

We just got married in September. It took us 58 years to find each other. First we pledged our union to God between each other, then we had a wedding ceremony this September, to share our joy and commitment With each other with our family and friends. Very meaningful, precious to both of us, shared with family and friends. It was also very small and we requested no gifts. I’m perfectly happy and he’s perfectly happy with what we’ve got, we are One. It’s amazing really. I adore him I love him I treasure him and he does me as well. Thank you God.

That is what we believe. We are not going to the state for permission for that in which the state has no business in. We went to the ultimate authority.

I’m addressing one paragraph of your post. What happens if one dies? Do the children not have another parent listed on their birth certificate?
What if both die?
What if there’s property? That’s what a will is for, that answers both these silly questions

Not our marriage. My husband means everything to me.

SOME WOMEN, oldasrocks. FANG & I have been married for
over 52 years. Not heaven on earth; but NOTHING is in this
mortal realm. I have worked just like FANG all these years,
sometimes outside the home, sometimes in the home. Worked
as FANG’S secretary for 30 years in his business.

FANG has had an eye for the “ladies”. I had my fill of his
nonsense pretty early on and have stuck with him thru
thick and thin and back thick again, thru surgery after
surgery, after surgery, after surgery sixteen times over.
Now I don’t think he fancies himself as Don Juan or every
“attractive” POT as “wife material”.

We didn't exactly elope, as our daughter had been borne 9 months prior to that. We were married by a JP in Florida prior to a cruise to the Bahamas. It was just us, my family lived in California and Oregon, and her large family lived in El Paso.

A big wedding was never in the cards, I didn't want to put that on my FIL...he had 7 daughters and busted his butt raising 10 kids. My wife didn't want a big wedding either. We were married by the church about 20 years ago, when I converted to Catholicism.

No regrets, though I think it's better for children to arrive after a couple of years of marriage. It's truly life changing to become a parent, but it can put a strain on relationships.

I'm referring to the current generation really.. You probably didn't have a $50K + wedding. I sure didn't. I've been to some weddings where the groom might as well only show up to do the wedding photos. At one I went to a few years ago everything was focused on the bride with a videography team that followed her captured her in thousands of shots. I couldn't get out of there fast enough...lol

When I was a teen my dad would tell me to date liberal girls but make sure I marry a conservative girl.

Many people do not, in fact, have wills. And without a will, and a clear set of legal guidelines, what happens to the children and property? These situations can lead to long, contentious, and expensive court cases. The laws did not come into being because of politicians wanting to exercise greater control over their subjects--they were a result of the desire to have a standardized protocol to use in the cases when both parents died.

“Marriages don’t necessarily last longer than just living together”

Yes, it does. Don’t believe the liberal nonsense that divorce rates are high. They have been falsely reported to destroy marriage as an institution.

I've given my two sons the same advice, but in a slightly different manner: it's ok to date a woman with tattoos, but you don't want to marry one.

I know some will take that the wrong way, I'm sure there are many conservative women with "body art", but IMO we're talking needle and haystack.

Then make a will for goodness sake!!! You’re creating this big dramatic problem where none has to exist!

I’ve heard of ones like that. One son/dil spent way too much on theirs. More than they could afford ($6000 or so) it wasn’t so much except THEY COULDNT AFFORD IT.
Our wedding? About $1500 for wedding and reception. We what is the forwarded whatever but we didn’t want to waste money we wanted it to be very small and meaningful. We were both very very joy-filled over the day! Null and Void came to our wedding!

Fabulous cash and prizes, reduced insurance rates, limited power of attorney, makes certain family members stop whining, clarification of property situation when somebody dies. A lot of legal stuff gets easier with a marriage license, especially in a community property state.
