Alexa skills recommendations
Vanity | Vanity

Posted on 12/25/2016 9:00:16 AM PST by Joe Republc

Santa just brought me an Amazon Echo Dot. Enjoying it so far, especially the Unlimited Music trial, which will play most songs I ask for pretty quickly.

I’ve enabled the Fox News “skill” for my “Flash Briefing”, which gives me an updated news summary. Are there other news skills I should check out with a conservative viewpoint? Or other Alexa skills in general you think I should check out?

Merry Christmas, - Joe

The top is also a volume knob.

“Alexa stop” is a handy voice command.

Isn’t it creepy to have an electronic box always listening and recording everything you say?

Later today I will be getting a Kindle Fire Table with Alexa.

I will be watching this post by you to get some hints.

We don’t watch Faux TV, but I do go to their internet site for some news. I can use Alexa for Faux news and our local tv update. We don’t watch the local news as it is all about the BLMers killing each other and the evil Trump people. I do go to their web site for a quick news update. Alexia might help there.

It comes in handy when cooking if you quickly want to know, for example, how many teaspoons in half a cup. It also is a pretty comprehensive jukebox. But I still prefer to manuually turn on and off the lights.

Sounds like fun. Will follow this thread incase friends got these things.

Personally I’d program it to call me “You Missed” and take it to the range-
“Bam!”... “Alexa?”... “Yes, You Missed?”... “Bam!”... “Alexa?”...

Look in to IFTTT.com and the recipes they have on there. I can tell Alexa to add something to my shopping list, it then moves to iPhone Reminders and my Anything app will pull from there to put it in my Shopping List there.

The light switches/outlets/bulbs are somewhat pricey now, but super handy. I have a few switches that are a pain to reach and this makes it super easy to turn the lights on and off. I have a couple of outlets for turning on my Tuner and TV. I don’t need to hunt down my remotes for those.

I’ve only gotten her to play one of my podcasts, not sure why I can’t get any others to play from it.

Ask Alexa to tell you a Trump Joke,

then ask that democRAT whore to tell you an Obama joke...see what you get.

http://smile.amazon.com/alexadeals — Discounted items you can order directly with your dot. Garth Brooks fans will find quite a collection of items for under $2.00

(if you’re not supporting a charity already with your purchases, great time to do that now.)

We really enjoy using Echo, but it can often get confused with your request...so be patient. We will frequently ask Alexa for the weather before venturing outside...ask her to tell us a joke or any bit of trivia (what is the capital of Oregon)...the current price of a stock. I think it’s most useful for adding things to our shopping list (e.g. “Alexa, add eggs to the shopping list”). Then you can ask Alexa to repeat the shopping list, or sign on to Alexa and print out the shopping list before going out.

Congrats on getting Amazon Echo. A couple items I use, IHeartRadio is a good app for Alexa, all I have to say is, Alexa play KSFO, and it plays. Also the weather is good, timer is good.

Thanks, folks, for the tips!

One thing that impresses me is how well Alexa picks up on my voice. We have an open main living floor space, and she understands my commands from another room without my having to yell.

Heads up on a Kindle Fire. If you have an Amazon account with a stored credit card, check your credit card statement for odd charges from Amazon. I was gifted a Fire by my daughter who set up a Free Time app for the grandson. The app is not so free at $5.29 a month. The Fire is great for the price if you do mind the constant merchandising from Amazon.

Thanks, my family got me the no ads version.

I set it up last night, and let the battery charge fully.

It is as fast as my ChromeBook which is fast.

Having said that, those with limited tablet/digital experience would be lost.

There are no instructions in or on the box. You have to plug it in.

You need your email addies and other data.

After you turn it on, it is fairly easy to enter the data you need.

It connected to our fastest wifi connection and seems very secure. The connection was faster and the result better than my Acer. My Acer would not connect at the fastest WIFI and is very weak in most areas of our home.

I found that I could easily transport all of my google contacts which makes life easier.

In a few minutes, I read all of my emails on Comcast and Google and sent a couple.

We use Amazon prime and our pictures on AP were downloaded quickly.

I got it to replace my 2 year old Acer tablet which is dying on it 2 year old birthdate.

Great screen, and my Amazon books are very readable.

Silk, the browser is very fast. It found my CPap site which records my nightly sleep and the display is as good as my 15 inch Chromebook. It was chopped up on the Acer and Android phone.

I will remove my sd memory card from the Acer and put it in the Fire today sometime. I don’t know if I even need it with the Prime for our photos. I got the 32 gb memory, and it will be all I need.

So far so good. Of course, you can’t really evaluate any electronic gizmo until you have used them for at least a month on a regular basis.

Thanks again for the feedback.

I just got it for my wife for Christmas, so of course I am using it at least as much as she is.

Alexa Tunein:

Dogzebra Radio
Inception Radio Network
Conspiracy HQ Radio Network
Red State Talk Radio

More radio suggestions, folks?

Having radio stations and music play by voice is straight out of some very creepy science fiction movies. :-)

Very cool...

If you are paranoid it will catch you doing something bad you can just unplug it!

Classical music suggestion: Play Shostakovich quartet
