Tony Romo will make his 2016 debut on the first day of 2017.
Romo, who has missed the entire season after suffering a back injury in the preseason and then being demoted in favor of Dak Prescott, is expected to play on Sunday, January 1, against the Eagles, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
That appears to be a change in plans for the Cowboys, who had previously indicated that they wouldn’t risk an injury to Romo in a meaningless game and would turn to Mark Sanchez if they decided to give Prescott some rest in the regular season finale.
The Cowboys may want to make sure Romo isn’t too rusty in case they need him in the playoffs. Prescott is the unquestioned starter, but if he were to get hurt in the postseason, they’d turn to Romo to try to guide them to the Super Bowl.
The Cowboys may also want to show other teams that Romo can still play, in the hopes that they can trade him in the offseason.
Romo’s last regular-season game was Thanksgiving of 2015, when he threw three interceptions and suffered the second of his three recent serious injuries.
Why??? The record is spectacular without him.

Romo had the league's best passer rating (113.2) in 2014. Romo threw 31 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions. Fact is, he has more fourth-quarter game-winning drives in the regular season (16) than any QB since 2011.
the victory is not needed. Why take the chance of hurting your Star Quarterback? It’s basic football.
Too good to be a back-up QB, not quite good enough to be an elite starter. If regular season wins are what a team is after, Romo is your QB. If playoff wins are what a team is after, Romo is a dud.

HOWEVER, in this case, you have a young QB who is confident and has won the most games in team history, and you have a star QB who was a franchise QB until he got injured and the young QB replaced him. Playing the star QB has a prospect of creating a tension on the team, taking just a bit of confidence from the young QB and forcing him to look over his shoulder, especially if the star QB plays well in his outing.
I understand why you'd want Romo to get some reps going into playoffs. I just think, all things considered, it is more likely to upset the chemistry of the team at a crucial time than it is to gain a benefit to the team that you only have IF Dak gets hurt. I think they are making a big mistake.

I mean mid-season when Romo held the press conference to make it clear this was Dak’s team.
There had been a lot of angst about “what to do about Tony” before that.
The fact is, room has these awesome stats.....and the cowboys always sucked with him at the helm.
Well, management could offer Dak 30% of the money they save trading Tony...
I bet Dak wouldn’t have any problem with that!
Seriously, it may do Dak good to watch a game now that he’s very experienced. Maybe see something new and go to another level. Just speculating.

He took Dallas to the Playoffs in 2014. He also made Second Team All-Pro (Players vote) in 2014.
He beat Detroit in the First Round in 2014. He lost to Green Bay in the 2014 Second Round, but posted a 143.6 QB Rating in that game.
Negatives:
He has just 2 wins in 6 playoff games.
He will start next season at 37 years old.
He had three injuries, and played in just 4 games, in the last two years.
Don’t make too much of this. They have no intention of trading Romo if their back up is Sanchez unless he is looking to move. The only reason they would move anyone would be Sanchez to try to open a spot for that third stringer of the future behind Prescott and legitimate backup. If Romo wants to go, he could command a couple of draft choices but it may have to involve a couple of teams movements. But Romo is a sound #2 for Dallas knowing the system and being ready for short use. They need to get rid of some high paid second strings to make CAP space and get the youth QB they are now using from this year.

I was wrong about Peyton Manning at Denver, so I don’t have a lot of ego invested in this stuff. But I don’t see Romo winning a superbowl...ever.
Playing Romo and Mark Sanchez is fine - but Dak Prescott should get the start, maybe play 2 or 3 series, then hand it over to Romo. Prescott is the present and future of the Dallas QB, and they’re incredibly lucky to have gotten him - the last thing they need to do is raise questions about his job security or anything else to undermine his confidence.
