Man Receives $128 Fine for Warming up Car in His Driveway
NBC Miami ^ | JANUARY 9, 2017 | K. QUERRY

Posted on 01/09/2017 12:28:12 PM PST by nickcarraway

Police often warn car owners to not leave their cars unattended while warming them up on the driveway.

Officials say leaving your car running is an open invitation for thieves who want to make a quick getaway.

But it wasn’t thieves who targeted Taylor Trupiano’s vehicle.

Trupiano, a Michigan resident, said many people have to warm up their cars for several minutes in the brutal Michigan winter.

However, he didn’t know that he would be fined for it.

After leaving his car running in the driveway for several minutes, he came outside to find a ticket on his windshield.

The Roseville Police Department gave Trupiano a $128 fine for leaving the keys in the ignition with the motor running and no one around.

WXYZ reports that there is no state law against leaving your car running, but several cities have ordinances against the practice.

Guess you need to bundle up and sit in the front seat with a loaded handgun. Glad I live in flyover country.

So what next....the cops checking to see if your front door is locked?

Or...your kids were outside playing...and you weren't right there with them?

Or you ate three Twinkies...in a day.

Or you had adult beverages in front of your kids?

@#^#$&^(^($!!!

Leave the diesel running. I have an “02” Ford with 326k on it and I almost never turn it off. 14 hrs uses maybe 5 gals of fuel.

I'd guess...the person wanted a warm car interior.

Period.

The only time I’ve seen crankcase oil dilution in an engine in good condition was when the carb float stuck open on a generator. Automotive engines get their oil replaced long before the tiny amount of dilution becomes a significant factor.

I read that while the Alaska Pipeline was being built in the 70's that had to do exactly that during the winter with the heavy equipment lest they find themselves unable to start them during working hours.OTOH,I'm on my third diesel and I've started all three in temps of -20F...-30F ...and even -40F.All three times were after the car had sat outside for 12+ hours. All three,in addition,were/are equipped with auxiliary heaters powered by the battery so the interiors warm up quickly.

Kennewick has a similar ordinance but I’ve never heard of an idling vehicle with a manual transmission being stolen. A fair number of automatics, though.

One of my cars is a five speed. Sometimes I let it idle with the door wide open looking for a laugh.

My 17 year old drives it most of the time. He took it in for service the other day and they were amazed a kid knew how to operate it.

if you’re using the correct viscosity oil, warmup is not necessary! And I’m just a girl!

I went to college in NW Michigan. I never, ever scraped off the lower left corner of my windshield. That’s where the parking pass was. I parked wherever I wanted and never got a ticket. Even in faculty parking.

I used to have a 1990 Ford Galaxy 500 that had a blue light on the instrument panel when the engine was below operating temperatures and instructions not to accelerate aggressively until the light went out.

Let the police get back to what they do best - catching genuine bad guys, not going after pc crimes like leaving your cars unlocked or warming up your own car in front of your own home, on your own property!

The boys and girls in blue have to feel real sissyfied writing tickets for such nonsense!

If not, they've strayed too far into the pc swamp and need heading off to a few retraining sessions held by Chuck Norris!

They’re making the potential victim responsible because they might attract and make it easy for a thief? Have they made it illegal to do things that might attract and make it easy for a rapist?

All oil drains down to the oil pan when it sits in your drive way overnight....in cold weather it thickens along with EVERY other fluid minus your alcohol laced antifreeze. All of your moving metal parts within your drive train will be unduly stressed until the engine burning all of the extra fuel introduced into the cylinder by the computerized injector generates enough heat that in turn gets your oil and other fluids to near operating temperatures. depending on how cold your area is 2-5 minutes is fine...a good example is if you ever drove a stick shift and you try hoping in and just going in the cold...it is hard to shift because the fluid is thickened by the cold...once warmed up it shifts smoothly...if you plan on keeping your vehicle as opposed to just leasing (rid of in 24 to 36 months) let it warm up while you scrape your windows or get back inside to get a coffee to go...believe me you and your car will be much happier. No unneeded wear and tear and your car’s engine will last longer.

Translation. The police are incapable of protecting you or your possessions. Why not disband them and give every able-bodied adult in the city a gun and community lessons?
