Ugh (Euro Snowfall Forecast for upcoming East Coast Snowstorm)

Posted on 03/12/2017 2:25:08 PM PDT by dirtboy

Both the Euro and GFS are showing stonger storms in closer to the coast, so this could well become reality.

No, I remember the 1978 blizzard very well as I lived in Revere, MA at the time, which was one of the hardest hit communities - schools were closed for three solid weeks! I was still in high school at the time but I got tons of stories about it. The day of that storm, they sent us home from school early. The wind was so strong that I had to turn around and walk backwards on the way home or the wind would have blown me over. Then the "wall" of snow hit around dark. Never saw anything like it. It went to a whiteout instantaneously and it snowed like that for 36 more hours. The storm actually stalled off Nantucket for a full day.

The storm I'm referring to was sometime in the mid 1990s, probably around 1994. I forget the exact year but I was working for an office equipment company as a field tech in downtown Boston. They had us doing service calls up until the time that the city shutdown. I remember my wife being pissed because the company kept me until it was too late to get home but I didn't mind one bit. It was an adventure.

Back to 1978, everybody in Boston at that time remembers the big blizzard Feb 6-7 but just a couple weeks earlier, Jan 20, we had another big snowstorm in Boston of 20 inches - which was at the time hyped as "storm of the century". The Feb blizzard pretty much erased that storm from most people's memories.

I will always remember the National Guard coming to Revere in the wake of that '78 blizzard. They had armored vehicles going up and down the main streets for at least a week. My side street did not get plowed for nearly two weeks.

Many people in metropolitan areas aren’t exactly ‘preppers’. In addition, the ‘hysteria’ - warranted or not - means that the shelves will be cleared pretty quickly; you want to get there first and before the long lines ;-)

Yes, it's been a fairly happy time for me. I think the Nov election has a lot to do with it (big sigh of relief that Hillary did not get in) but I just spent much of February in Florida so a little taste of winter before it turns spring doesn't bug me too much. Plus a lot of other things going on in my life to be thankful for. So I'll ride this positive wave as long as I can!

Likely youi are thinking of the Blizzard or ‘93 that nailed the whole east coast.

It was considered the biggest storm on record as more than half the people in the US were affected by it.

1993 Storm of the Century
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_Storm_of_the_Century

It also hit March 15.

We used to live in the 20-24 inch area. My BIL still lives there. I think they had a storm before Christmas that kept him house-bound for a day or two. My wife was getting panicked messages from him that he HAD to get to the store but he couldn't. (I'm guessing he didn't learn anything from that. If he dies of starvation after three days I'll let you all know.)

We had a big one in March 2015, too. In fact, it was the biggest one of the season, just like this one.

Yes, I think that was the one! 1993. Makes sense because my youngest son would have been barely two and the main reason my wife was upset with me not getting home was that she was “all alone changing the diapers” while I gallivanted around the city eating oysters and having a jolly old time.

Latest GFS run - strong storm close to the coast, strong agreement with the Euro:

Ominous because the Euro is usually pretty accurate.

Exactly.

My questions to all you who just HAVE to go to the store, because of a blizzard (much less random snow):

-do you have basically empty cupboards and refrigerators? Is that your normal state?

-do you really need to fill up the nooks and crannies in storage for what is for most of us, nothing much worse than 2 days unable to get out?

I mean, come on!

Snow is good. It is made of water.

My family doesn’t; but I’ve known people who lived almost entirely on fast-food eaten out, or having it delivered. There are lots of them in cities; they do little prep, have almost nothing in the fridge.

Interesting wind speed forecast map from Intellicast.

http://www.intellicast.com/National/Wind/WINDcast.aspx

By 2 PM on Tuesday, the winds are going to be out of the north across Lake Ontario.

I see the possibility of lake enhancement for the Syracuse area.

I am almost prepper prepared for winter.

I could go months out of my freezer.

Besides the fact that I watch the weather closely all the time, when I see something like this forecast out 5 days or so, I make sure I have everything I need.

Filled up with gas last week Thursday and went virtually nowhere.

No waiting until we’re in the teeth of the storm and panic buying, fighting the insane crowds at the store for me.
