Last year, Eric Clapton revealed that he is suffering from peripheral neuropathy, a condition which affects nerves in the bodys extremities and can cause numbness, shooting pain and loss of co-ordination; he said that it was making it hard to play guitar anymore. Fans feared that it might spell the end of his career.
Judging by his show at New Yorks Madison Square Garden last night (March 19) his first since discussing his condition fans need not worry. Over the course of an hour and a half show, Claptons guitar playing was as lyrical and soulful as it has ever been. Notably, there were no other guitarists in his band (he has toured with as many as two extra six-stringers in recent years). Clapton handled all lead and rhythm parts himself. And his vocals always underrated, probably due to his guitar hero status sounded great as well.
He seemed to be pacing himself a bit: he shared solos with his keyboardists, Chris Stainton and Walt Richmond. Although, on the other hand, he may have been graciously sharing the spotlight with lesser known, but extremely talented musicians. Whatever his reasoning, every solo served the song, and the fact that he played less solos made each of them all the much sweeter.

Helluva blues album.
I saw Mayall with Mick Taylor in '82 at the Roxy.
I don't recall Eric singing with the Yardbirds. But I do recall reading that he couldn't stand them.
You’re back Mojo!
Spring Break here
Just got in from TC
My oldest boy and his fellow redneck by choice pal are exploring the wilds of the UP in Wifey’s old land cruiser
Still snow in the yoop
Me and Wifey and the rest of the residuals are tadpoles are headed to New Orleans for four nights
Gonna eat good....coat and tie....mom dolled up
Galatoires and Commanders
It’s a ritual...like a southern pilgrimage
Side trip to Geaux Tigers for middle tadpole to check for college info
It starts early these days....
I will def be eating thin crispy fried catfish at Mittendorfs at Manchac on the way back from BR for the day trip
Mayall
Quite the carnal legend
A man after my own heart..lol
I think his antique porn collection..literally museum worthy
Burned up when his mansion did?
Eric hated all the yardbirds stuff I liked
The early rock sound
He wanted blues
Yeah, I heard Mayall lost it all in the fire. Never lost his fire for the blues, though. And neither did Eric. Both he and Keith listened to Robert Johnson until they were blue in the face.
yes.
I drove right by Dockery 8 days ago....Rosedale and Rolling Fork and Satartia
I understand why musicians love Robert Johnson
But as a listener I find Son House early recordings stronger
Tommy Johnson too and John Hurt
And of course Charley Patton
Great musician ...but one big YAWN for me musically since Cream ( Mayall , Yardbirds ) ...
Lurker, that is a great song! Just what I needed to get my day started. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Best,
L
As a guest on SNL about 15 years ago, Clapton burned through the most incredible version of “Five Long Years” I’ve ever witnessed.
I’ve been looking for a video of it for some time but haven’t been able to find it.
That white English guy might be the finest blues guitarist of all time.
Eric Clapton, the guy who had an upper level apartment in a big city, put a huge ‘buzz’ on, left the nonchildproof patio door open, allowing his toddler to go out to the patio and accidentally take a dive to the pavement below?
That guy?
No.
The guy who was married to the woman who did that.
I agree. I saw Beck twice. Just saying the Hendrix CONCERT was better than Cream or either of Beck’s.
Saw Cream in the summer of ‘68 in San Diego with Deep Purple the opening act. Clapton, Bruce and Baker were superb. As the late guitar dealer Ed Roman said about Clapton, “What do coffee and Eric Clapton have in common?” They both suck without cream.
And if I could have the spirit of the hands of a guitar player of my choice imbued into my 70 year old arthritic claws, it would not be Clapton but it would be a coin-toss between Jeff Beck and John McLaughlin.
Dear Mariner,
re:
“The guy who was married to the woman who did that.”
He was the baby-daddy, so it is on him, too.
Of all the people I have seen in concert, the only ones that younger people seem to even know these days are Eric Clapton and the late B.B. King, both of whom I had the bad luck of catching on an off night. There is nobody I have any desire to see in concert anymore, having stopped listening to popular music or caring about it one way or another... and Hubert Sumlin is already gone.
