I have (yet another) dumb question: if the muslims are bunkered in tunnels, what good does a large blast on the surface do?
The effects from the shock of such a tremendous blast would be . . . tremendous.
Extreme blast/pressure waves can destroy tunnels and most everything inside them.
My understanding is that it pulverizes and collapses said tunnels.
“I have (yet another) dumb question: if the muslims are bunkered in tunnels, what good does a large blast on the surface do?”
Two things:
1. The concussion of the explosion collapses the mouths of some of the tunnels
2. (This is the biggie) it pulls all the air out of the tunnels so that whoever is hiding there suffocates.
Blows the door shut. And keeps it that way.
what good does a large blast on the surface do
sucks all of the air out
Do some research on the effects thermobaric explosives. Not sure how far down a tunnel the shock wave will penetrate, but the concussive shock is enough to suck the eyeball out of sockets and brain matter out of other orifices in protected bunkers.
Among other things it can trigger cave ins.
Concussion for one. Kills at a distance. We used to drop concussion grenades in the water near ships in Da Nang harbor. If anyone is swimming within so many meters they get knocked unconscious and drown. A big enough bomb close enough in the atmosphere will kill people within a certain radius. The ground will conduct the concussion wave into the tunnels.
It is a tunnel buster bomb and doesn’t detonate on the surface. It penetrates into the underground bunker and then explodes.

Not a dumb question. The blast from a MOAB in the vicinity of caves, bunkers, holes, etc., creates an overpressure, then a massive vacuum, that collapses the lungs of any people in the vicinity.
I heard it can deplete the oxygen in those tunnels.
...the explosive content is some what different with
the MOAB...it’s ability to rattle vital body
parts at greater distances (underground too)makes it most effective
I don’t know about muslims, but it is a good test case for North Korea, isn’t it?
The over pressure from the Moab will kill everything within 1 mile of the blast radius. Caves are vunerable since they act to increase the pressure wave.
That “surface” blast so dramatically compresses the earth beneath it that even roaches living up to 100 yds underneath the surface would be splat.

Think of the tunnels as straws...all that energy pushing through them...then literally sucking the air out of them...not to mention collapse of walls and ceilings. This is the perfect weapon for tunnels and caves.
Shock wave caves them in unless they’re extensively reinforced and shored.
The pressure wave is enormous - to get a small idea of what it might be like, stand 10 feet away and 2 feet ahead of the barrel (parallel to it of course) from someone shooting a .308 or 300-06, and you will have a small idea of what such a shock wave can do when it encompasses all under it for a mile.
