As ESPN Got More Political in 2016, It Lost Republican Viewers

Yesterday, it was announced ESPN is laying off upwards of 100 employees – many of whom are prominent on-air talent. The challenges facing ESPN are newly discovered; a lot has been written about ESPN’s recent decline in ratings and subscriptions. FOX Sports – the primary TV competitor to “the worldwide leader in sports” – has enjoyed twisting the knife as ESPN faces cutting on-screen talent to make up for budget shortfalls. The FOX blog “Outkick the Coverage” has attributed ESPN’s decline to the rising partisanship coming out of Bristol, labeling the network “MSESPN” in pieces like this one, headlined “ESPN Profit Plummets As Network Turns Left”. “Outkick the Coverage’s” Clay Travis supports his argument with Scarborough data showing most sports fans are conservative politically. With the news of today’s layoffs, Travis argues that the network’s leftward turn is “more a symptom of the collapse than it is a cause of the collapse.”

I was listening to some Boston sports radio people talking about the layoffs, and they beat all around the bush, talking about the programming is bad, the people are bad, blah blah blah blah.

Never said a word about the extreme left political advocacy they force feed their audience with.

Boy, talk about an elephant in the room.

All of the cable companies carved out the state, and established territories. Therefore, they would create a defacto monopoly in each area, and charge as much as they want.

ESPN is obviously going to focus on NFL, major college football and basketball, and the NBA...that's where they've sunk their money for the next decade on rights fees.

ESPN is not looking for analysis, that's why Ed Werder and others were let go. They want to fill the airtime with blondes and ex-players, both with hot sports opinions.

When you fire Andy Katz, but retain power conference homers like Jay Williams and Dan Dakich, it demonstrates how clueless their management is.

I think it can be traced to the day Roger Goodell took over as NFL Commish. That guy is firmly in the pocket of Democrat Party apparatchiks.

I think that’s a stretch. You might just as easily point to 24-7 sympathetic commentary on The Colon, or HeShe Bruce Jenner. This woukd be a very hard one to find one incident, esp when the study starts in 2015.

Yes, Rush has been on this for years. Apparently “concussions” didn’t work. An equally great dsnger is the thuggism associated with so much of the game, which you really don’t see in the white/Latino dominated MLB ( and I am not a baseball fan)

I singled out the Costas incident because of the backlash it received, and his subsequent apology. Since then, the sports talk left has been "no apology."

They also lost all of New England after their idiotic obsession with the lies and innuendo known as “deflategate”. They’re nothing but Goodell’s lackeys.

I only watch ESPN when it’s the only place to see a game.

A lot of wounds, many self inflicted.

They didn't understand that parroting the BLM line would be toxic to their bottom line.

I’d have kept pressing the issue.

I had a similar conversation with a co-worker several years ago about the real, comparative history regarding the Republican Party, the Democrat Party and blacks in America. After I convinced her that truth is not hate speech, she gave up and left...

“I’d have kept pressing the issue.”

He is a felon and has done things that are felony stupid. Although, I’d guess his IQ is stellar. He can glance at a complicated problem and solve it much quicker than I can. He has poor impulse control and forearms and upper arms approximately four times mine. (Seriously huge.) His reactions to being challenged are to get spitting angry. Once, he ran away when he caught himself about to go stupid. He obviously can’t control himself and I can’t rely on him catching himself in time. Also, he works for me and I’d really like to maintain an even-keel emotional status.

I sensor everything I say to him in an attempt to not trigger him. I had no idea taking a kneee could be an issue. Now I know.

I stopped watching MS-ESPNuts when Stephen Smith (diminutive black guy with big mouth) skewered Tebow for praying in the field while excusing black players who invoked God in any fashion. His wacky logic was that the black players were legit and belonged in the NFL hence they were allowed. Smith has made many outrageous comments with racist tones against non-blacks. I wrote to MS-ESPNuts with no replies yet they fired Rush over one comment that was not racist. I’m done with them. If I cannot find the event I want to see live elsewhere, I find it on stream later without care for the final result.

I watch games. I don’t watch the buildup, the hype or the after-analysis.
