Star Trek: Discovery trailer (looks like PC run amok)

New look at the new Trek incarnation. Overall it looks like a PC mess. White men are almost an after-thought. An overtly gay man on the bridge. Set a decade before TOS. Of course, CGI is many iterations ahead of what has come before and it looks gorgeous.

Said to be broadcast worldwide on pay-for-TV CBS offshoot. May explain why the characters are World Government types.

Show was due January 2017. Then summer, 2017. Now -- who knows? The original show runner quit and show has been turned-over to others. Casting reportedly still incomplete.

Like other Trek fans I am still unsure why "Enterprise" was hurriedly canceled after four seasons.

The idea that this will be a show for all nationalities and sexual choices seems doomed to me. When you try to appeal to everyone you most often appeal to no one. Trek got its strength from force of character and muscular story lines. "Discovery" looks to be its neutered grandchild.

Voyager went all in on the PC stuff. Woman captain, space american indian first officer, black vulcan, asian navigator, hispanic female klingon, and just one white guy who was, of course, a bad seed.

Yup, they went all in. But they forgot the gay character so they got no credit. This time they won't make that mistake. Lots of gay moments, you can count on it.

That was not the case in STTNG. I can remember an episode where Picard told someone that there was no money and people worked only for the benefit of Mankind and the Alliance.

Watch Jake Sisko try to borrow money from a Ferengi on Deep Space 9

If that is the case, then Pike did not do anything with Vina when she was green, either. Pike didn’t even kiss her.

> Short short skirts and hawt alien women for Kirk. It took 2 guys to replace him: Picard (thoughtful) AND Riker (horndawg).

Separate argument, but I think any "red blooded American" would rather be Kirk than Picard/Riker.

Vina was at the beck and call of Pike. He had but to whistle.

And it is 100% clear that Pike piked her when he was returned to Talos IV to live out his life in really good illusions.

:)

Kirk would have NEVER been Locutus. He would have taken the Borg over by sheer will power and made them slam their cubes into the nearest sun.

THEN he would have had his way with 7 of 9, 7 to 9 ways!

:)

>>“I can remember an episode where Picard told someone that there was no money”

True, but in the very first STTNG episode, Dr. Crusher bought some rug (or something) on that Farpoint planet and requested that “credits be transferred from her account” :-) .<<

The issue of “is there money in the ST universe” is extensive. I t gets best explored in an episode of DS9 where Jake and Nog discuss it at some length.

It turns out many if not most species use some form of money. Humans and Vulcans seem to work for the hell of it with no compensation. Physical things are pretty easy to come by (thanks to replicators and holo-suites).

I think in that Universe most intelligent men would blow their brains out from sheer boredom.

It’d be nice if someone did a series in the Star Trek universe that would be like Firefly in that it wouldn’t be a glamorous crew on a glamorous starship but more normal people just trying to get by.

I gave Trek allowances until the JJ Abrams reboot. That did it for me and I no longer care what they come up with anymore.

That was not the case in STTNG. I can remember an episode where Picard told someone that there was no money and people worked only for the benefit of Mankind and the Alliance. Absolute Pure Utopia that cannot and will not ever exist unless you breed all traits out of humans.

The Federation, not the Alliance

The Alliance. Absolute Pure Utopia was the Firefly/Serenityverse.

Boy #1 (Borodin): Why ere the independents even fighting us? Why wouldn't they look to be more civilized?
Teacher: ...With all the social and medical advancements we can bring to the independents, why would they fight so hard against us?
Young River: We meddle. People don't like to be meddled with, we tell them what to do, what to think, don't run don't walk we're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We meddle.

.....

Mal: This report is maybe twelve years old. Parliament buried it, and it stayed buried till River dug it up. This is what they feared she knew. And they were right to fear, because there's a whole universe of folk who are gonna know it, too. They're gonna see it. Somebody has to speak for these people. You all got on this boat for different reasons, but you all come to the same place. So now I'm asking more of you than I have before. Maybe all. Sure as I know anything I know this, they will try again. Maybe on another world, maybe on this very ground swept clean. A year from now, ten, they'll swing back to the belief that they can make people…better. And I do not hold to that. So no more running. I aim to misbehave.

White males (whites in general) regulated to the back of the bus and lesser roles.

Swing and a miss. Next.

No doubt they’ll throw in one “historical” reference to the failed presidency of President Trump for good measure.

They'll have him giving fellatio to the captain under the navigation console.
