We should know by now how to handle an outage (or downage, as the case may be), and I believe we handled this one a lot better than previous outages.

Except maybe Laz, I think you pulled him from the brink of death.

It goes without saying (until I decided just now to say it), that you have single handedly saved me and thousands of other readers from actually listening to the television, or even caring about BOR !

I haven't seen a thank you thread, so I started this one.

Jim Robinson, BLESS YOU. With FR down, you couldn't take some time off and focus on the repairs. More than a few of us were going near-insane as world civilization came much too close to collapse. Coincidence? I think not. Without our wisdom, most 'pubs in DC have no guiding principles to keep them strong.

Jim, you provided a venue at our Refugee Camp on FaceBook. It's an impossible situation. We're based on principle and an analysis of the world around us. While some of us were in danger of losing it, you often guided discussion and kept us informed. Their posters are mostly based on stupid pictures, fake news, and never questioning their marching orders. "Discussion" is insulting anyone who dares question the agenda.

I posted this on the FB page: We owe Mr. Zuckerberg a huge "thank you". The site wasn't perfect, but it worked.

And.....WE'RE BACK. So the maniacs better realize every idiotic, treasonous and criminal thing they do will be scrutinized.

Many thanks, and much appreciation, not only as a FReeper, but as another Sysadmin who knows -exactly- the kind of trials and tribulations you've just been through.

As you plan future system upgrades, let me offer some unsolicited thoughts:

• Please don't change the display/rendering software. The wonderful plain-text/HTML presentation is ESSENTIAL to those of us who don't have unlimited bandwidth and patience. The simple look of FR is one of my great joys.

• Please keep the "No ads or outside support" maxim (but of course you know why that's important).

• RAID1 disk mirrors are great. Even with SSDs, they're a good idea.

• A mirrored server is a good idea, so you can have rapid fail-over. Depends on your database as to how it's done.

• If you put stuff in the cloud, you still have to back it up. Cloud VMs aren't magic -- they're just servers in somebody else's datacenter. Have a ground-based clone/mirror site ready to run for when the cloud drops its load.

• It would be nice to add SSL (HTTPS) to the site, not just the donate pages.

• We stand behind you in your fight for Truth, Justice, and The American Way!

glad to see your back up...But not to sound conspiratorial do you have a reason for outage yet?.. reason I ask well 1st I'm a network engineer and work in network security
it was such a bad time for a major outage for a site like this with What was transpiring at the time

..and while FR was down I was hitting hard Reddit "The Donald" and they alse were have problem but of a diffrent kind in since its a shared site its was not down its was being mess with by the lib Moderators of the general site to push The Donald off Bottom line I noting and uptick of Anything pro Trump on the Internet having problems It 100% standalone site is easy picking because they can just knock it down shared sites like a reddit They have to harass and drive off the forums Social media sites like Twitter or Facebook the harasser drive off or ban the users
