Hundreds of passengers were forced onto the runway in Austin on Wednesday evening when a United plane's wing struck an American Airlines flight.
United flight 898 was taxiing from Gate 19 to the runway for its flight to Austin at around 8:20pm when it clipped American flight 2675. That plane had just landed from JFK and was taxiing to Gate 21.
One of the United flight's passengers told KXAN that after the nasty scrape the pilot came on over the intercom and admitted that he was at fault.

Good point. Partly because of Tenerife, runway mistakes are taken extremely seriously by the airlines and FAA. That pilot may want to start looking for a new career.

To Austin’s credit, they have one of the lowest vehicular death rates in the Country.

Thank God for that tollroad around Austin. It might be a 10 buck trip, but it keeps you outta Austin, and it’s one of the best most safest roads I’ve ever been on.
And with an 85 mph speed limit and with the right car - doing a nice 100 plus mph is kinda fun.

You can see damage to the winglet structure, that plane must now be taken out of service, repaired, and re-certified safe for flight. that costs the airline money.

The United captain wouldn't have been able to see his wingtip from the cockpit, so ordinarily they would rely on taxi lane centerlines to provide sufficient clearance. In this case, though, since the pushback distance could vary, it probably relied more upon a judgment call by the United captain, and he clearly made the wrong choice.
So, probably several factors involved. Regardless, if all they did was ding up the winglets, that's a minor issue (though a major inconvenience while they investigate).

True, mostly safe but you will get airborne doing 75+ on 130 where it buckles around Lochhart or have a losing interaction anywhere on 130 with a feral hog at night. Other than that, it’s a great and fast alternative to I-35 through Austin at any price.
Thank God it was not another Tenerife incident. Still the worst in aviation history...
ABIA is the only major airport in Austin with major airlines such as United, American, Southwest and British Airways.
If I’m anywhere near Lockhart, it sure ain’t on 130. It’s on Hwy 183 at Blacks. Or maybe Smitty’s.

I was on a flight from OHare when our port side winglet banged a stanchion really hard. Me and the person in the center seat alerted the flight attendant who came over and said - “ Don’t worry about that, those things don’t do anything anyway”
I was on a USAir flight that did that. They at least took us to the terminal before throwing us out.

The USAF took volunteers from every airbase that had pathologists and flew the crews to Dover for body identification. It was a gruesome task as many of the bodies were burned beyond recognition.
