GOP Replacement For Obamacare's Individual Mandate: Worse Than Doing Nothing
Investor's Business Daily ^ | 6/8/2017 | Sally Pipes

Few provisions within Obamacare have proved less popular than the individual mandate, which requires all Americans to secure insurance or pay a fine. Unfortunately, some Senate Republicans are proposing a replacement that's even worse.

As part of their bid to repeal Obamacare, Sens. Bill Cassidy, R-La., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, want to allow states to automatically enroll the uninsured in health plans.

At least Obamacare let people choose whether to buy health insurance or not. Sens. Cassidy and Collins are calling for an even heavier dose of government paternalism, one that would increase federal spending, line the pockets of insurers, and raise premiums.

The Cassidy-Collins plan would provide refundable tax credits that would, in theory, cover the entire premium for a catastrophic health plan — chosen by the government, of course. States would take those credits and ship them directly to insurance companies in return for covering folks who hadn't secured coverage on their own.

President Trump is learning that there isn’t a heck of a lot of difference between the republican establishment and the democrat establishment.

He was elected because of his outsider status.

Sooner or later he will have to bring in knowledgeable outsiders to put together the legislation he needs to implement his agenda.

He cannot rely on the old line establishment insiders to bring legislation forward that upsets the systems and policies that they themselvs spent years building.

Sure - they talk a good game to get elected but year after year we see it is just talk.

They railed against Obamacare for 7 years and promised to kill it in every election.

But when we finally gave them the power to do it by electing a republican president and majorities in both houses we find out that they didn’t even have a rudimentary plan ready to go.

At least Obamacare let people choose whether to buy health insurance or not.

I don't think so. "Mandate" means they are compelled to have insurance. No choice.

And what about the companies that were forced to buy insurance for their employees.....resulting in thousands losing several hours of work each week.

“want to allow states to automatically enroll the uninsured in health plans.”

Can’t states individually already do this? VT tried single payer and CA is trying it now. It’s really, really stupid, but states can do this... as long as the rest of the country doesn’t have to pay for the folly which is probably the case here.

Not the GOP, Marxists/socialists regardles of their party. Democrats are notorious for entering the ranks of the conservatives in order to distort, suppress and pervert the goals of the conservatives. Collins and many others are examples of this.

I have been keeping an eye on this, along with the tax bill, the Dodd-Frank bill and what is going on with Comey...

I see where the Representatives want ‘their ideas’ put into the health care plan, and the Senators want ‘their ideas’ put into the plan, then some taken out, other stuff put in, so by the time it gets to the President's desk, it will NOT be the plan he wants for America...so he will send it back, and then more haggling...this is the way Congress gets what they want...well folks, time for us to pick up the sword again and get the government OUT of our health care...it's up to us and only up to us...

There are several ways to do this, most failing way, call and write your representatives and senators, snail mailing them only goes in the shredder...so maybe we should plan a ‘huge’ rally in D.C. to let them know we ‘are not going to take it anymore’...

We can plan before August before they ‘go away again for time off’ or we can plan it for after...but whenever we plan it, we need to make it ‘huge’ I'm sure President Trump would love a ‘rally’ and I know we would, I miss them...

So lets start planning, tents, motel rooms, RV’s, etc. whatever it takes, we have to ‘fight’ to get what WE want!!!

I've been presenting the possible scenario below for the last couple of months. With each passing day I am getting more certain that this is what is going to happen.

1. Either Congress will not fix Obamacare, or their "fix" will do absolutely nothing to address the underlying problems with it.

2. Insurance companies roll out their 2018 renewals to their customers in late 2017, with massive increases in the premiums.

3. The Trump administration announces that its IRS waiver for the 2016 tax returns -- in which the mandate was effectively repealed for taxpayers filing their returns in 2017 who didn't want to tell the IRS that they were not insured in 2016 -- will be extended for 2017 as well.

4. The Trump administration then announces that -- under the authority vested in the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services under the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) -- it will grant waivers to any insurance carrier that comes up with a plan that actually saves people money, regardless of whether this plan actually meets any of the regulatory requirements of Obamacare.

Case closed. Obamacare is effectively repealed, and President Donald J. Trump comes out looking like the white in shining armor who rode into Washington and fixed a problem that the @ssholes infesting the swamp couldn't fix themselves.

Ping to Post #11. I think I see an interesting scenario here.

I can go with that scenario.

The affected people are a minority of a minority. Most Americans are either insured where they work or on Medicare. When all mandated insurance is either outrageously expensive or actually worthless, A private plan put forward to reflect reality and catastrophic care priced at a reasonable rate will be acceptable by those in the uninsured minority.

Ryan and McConnell (toadies of Romney) DEMAND RomneyCARE
remain --- irrespective of what the GOP Promised Americans
to get elected.

THEY ARE LIARS and could have repealed their seizure
of Americans' medical care and rights, but they have
not for 2 reasons.

1. They HATE Pres. Trump, and know this is a proverbial
dagger to his heart because he PROMISED to repeal this.

2. They obey and love RAT Romney who installed RomneyCARE
with Ted Kennedy to save BAIN and Romney money, after the
two left a wake of destroyed and raped companies.

There are LOSERS, and then there are BORN LOSERS. We, unfortunately, have the latter in our congress. How else could you describe those running from behind.

I don’t understand—what does the insurance company need a waiver from? Especially if they already are not participating in Obamacare?

Big flaw: sooner or later-—and for House, it’s 2018—they have to get reelected.

I have been developing a theory that regardless if whether they like Trump or not, whether they think he will succeed or not, by early 2018 you’ll see real action on taxes & health care. Quick action. Proposals like this Collins thing will be scrubbed for something more “free market” (don’t know what).

This is based on 2 realities: they HAVE to get elected & there will be a massive sweep if they don’t do these two things. Second, they HAVE the power to do whatever they want, even in the senate, even with the filibuster (i.e., make the Ds use a REAL filibuster).

I think they will fiddle for 2017, then “magically” pass stuff in time to get them reelected.
