A New Mexico man was arrested for allegedly beating his girlfriend and threatening to kill her — after Amazon’s Alexa called police, authorities said.

Eduardo Barros, 28, became angered with his unidentified girlfriend while housesitting in Tijeras, about 15 miles east of Albuquerque, and the dispute suddenly turned physical on July 2, authorities said.

Now that's what I call artificial intelligence. Dude was upset because he suspected that is GF was cheating on him. Beating her is never justified, IMO, unless it's for self-defense.

Absolutely agree, but that being said, there's no way I'd ever have one of these Alexa things in my home.

This thing is listening to everything it can hear and can and will call the cops on you without your knowledge.

My Alexa is fighting with my Siri. They are both obstinate b!tches and neither one wants to admit it’s wrong. I dread the day when their periods come on the same day.

Barros waved a gun and threatened to kill the woman before he allegedly asked: “Did you call the sheriffs?”

The question was inadvertently picked up by the smart speaker and the voice-powered virtual assistant recognized the phrase as a command — prompting it to call 911

Media hype. As usual.

You’ll know it when Alexa says, “We need to talk about your...technique.”

The story reads as if Alexa called the PD, AFTER the jerk saw 911 calling the woman’s phone and took it to be a voice command to “Call the sheriff”.

BUT -

Why would 911 be calling the woman’s phone without prompting? Bad writing, or covering up the truth of the matter.

Alexa heard the fight and called 911 on her own, and that is why 911 called the woman’s phone.

Alexa listens to everything. Alexa is always listening. Good for the stupid woman who picks felons as her boyfriends (with a child in the house), but, no, thank you.

My daughter has a phone that listens for “OK Google”, and it creeps me out. But, people of the Microwave Age are willing to trade privacy for convenience.

Alexa calling and messaging service is not able to connect to third-party calling services or landlines to make a 911 call

‘This thing is listening to everything it can hear and can and will call the cops on you without your knowledge.’

The abusive man uttered the words, ‘call the sheriffs.’ That’s what triggered Alexa.

What if your gf’s name is Alexa?

No, thanks. I’ll pass on this invasion. Frankly, I see nothing worthwhile in having such a device. I don’t need to ask it the capitol of Chili (Santiago - learned that in 6th grade Social Studies), buy more milk is a no brainer and the weather in Texas in the summer is always hot and dry. There. My life is complete. No worries.
