Did you know that surnames can go extinct just like species do? Think about it: do you know anyone these days named Chaucer?

One historical reason for surnames becoming extinct was World War I. Often, men who were friends and neighbors served together; when there were mass casualties, a village or town might lose a whole generation of their men. Because names at that time were often specific to an area, a name could be almost completely eliminated.

Interesting discussion. In my family, my wife’s family name is dying out, because none of her brothers had children.

There are extended family members with the name but not in her family line.

I wonder if a number of family names die out just due to marriage and women changing their name, and the children have the husband surname??? Prime candidates for this would be a family of sisters only. When they get married the family name goes away.

I was in boot camp with someone with the last name, Bobo. After lights out the fun began. Good night, Bobo echoed to snickers.

“My father and his two brothers had daughters, no sons.”

My grandfather had 8 kids — 5 daughters and 3 sons. None of his sons had a boy. His daughters were prolific, but that doesn’t do much for carrying on the name — at least from his lineage.

It’s suspected that Hitler’s mother was his father’s niece. Hitler carried on with his niece until she killed herself.

There were a lot of old English surnames among my school classmates that gave rise to occasional schoolyard taunts and amusement. Woodcock, Haithcock, Hedgecock, Throckmorton and mine which shall remain unspoken, lol.

Most popular new surname is Nuffin.

The Nuffins are not the most imaginative of families; they all have same first name.

:-)

T
Reminds me, the game show host Peter Marshall, was born with the surname LaCock. No shock that he changed it. Some names should die out because they will cause you so much trouble in your life.

My Dad went to school with somebody with the surname Lifshitz. As an adult he changed his last name to Lorring. Too many headaches and jokes with his given name.
