‘Miami Vice’ Reboot In Works At NBC With Vin Diesel & Chris Morgan Producing

Miami Vice is eyeing a return to NBC. The network has put in development a reboot of its signature 1980s action crime drama, with the Fast & Furious duo of Vin Diesel and Chris Morgan producing.

The remake, which had been in the works since last season, will be written by Peter Macmanus (The Mist, Satisfaction) and produced by Universal Television, Chris Morgan Productions and Diesel’s One Race TV. No executive producers have been locked in yet, but Morgan and Ainsley Davies of Chris Morgan Productions are expected to serve as EPs along with Diesel and Shana Waterman of One Race and Macmanus. Both Morgan and Diesel have deals with Universal TV.

The original series, created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive produced by Michael Mann, starred Don Johnson as James “Sonny” Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, two Metro-Dade Police Department detectives working undercover in Miami. It quickly became a pop culture phenom and ran on NBC for five seasons from 1984-89. The show, unlike standard police procedurals, drew heavily on 1980s New Wave culture and music, and became noted for its integration of music and visual effects.

USA began airing reruns in 1988, joined by an originally unaired episode, which ran on January 25, 1990.

A film adaptation of the series, directed by Michael Mann, was released by Universal in July 2006 with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as the leads.

This is one of two broadcast series remakes that are already in the works for next season, along with Charmed at the CW, from Jane the Virgin creator Jennie Urman Snyder.

Morgan is repped by ICM Partners and McKuin Frankel. Macmanus is with UTA.

I’d like to clarify something.

UF got rid of having live Gator mascots in the 1950s, so there’s no way that alligator was the UF Mascot, while Sonny was there.

Phillip Michael Thomas.. What ever happened to him?

He was busy pro creating.

Thomas is a vegetarian and is known as a nonsmoker and nondrinker. In 1986, Thomas married Kassandra Thomas. They have five children together (Noble, Kharisma, Sovereign, Sacred, and Imaj). In 1998, Thomas and Kassandra divorced. Thomas also has six other children (Sacha, Khrishna, India, Gabriel, Chayenne, and Melody) from previous relationships

I agree—no original ideas—just “reboots” or sequels or comic book characters.

Wow—just what America needs—more Miami Vice.

Maybe they can bring back Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine too.

Hollywood has run out of ideas.

One of the many reasons why I cannot remember the last time I watched a program on one of the three networks.

I remember that "down ending" featured the song Brothers In Arms by Dire Straits, which fit the mood perfectly. I recall seeing it only that one time.

That was back when bikinis and great music were the "in" thing.

Today, bikinis are replaced with open bathrooms, speed boats and hot cars cause global warming, and the music and fashion is cultural appropriation.

You're right that it's not going to be an easy project.

Best MV episode?

The one with Phil Collins as a wannabe coke dealer, only because he recently donated all his Alamo memorabilia to the actual Alamo.

As a Texan I must admit bias.

Best MV episode?

I liked the one with Glenn Frey as a pilot. And the one with Bruce Willis, ultimate bad ass.

Well I think about old shows I once saw and look them up. I also recently found an old series I saw as a kid, “Adventures in Paradise” with Gardner McKay, great show.
