That afternoon in late spring, her daughter finally got the jeweled belly button ring she had been asking for, and Breuner got a reminder that her little girl was growing up.
Breuner felt a swell of emotion, she said.
...
Im not saying everybody should do that, she added, but at least for me, my sense of this whole world is that its changing right in front of us, and we can either have our eyes open and be supportive and help our children make informed decisions when theyre young adults, or ignore it and hope it goes away.

Richard Dukes focused much of his research on tattoos and piercings among youth during his career as a sociology professor.
The professor emeritus at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, who was not involved in the new clinical report, said it compiles current medical knowledge and does not contradict any of his own research findings.
Tattoo regret is fairly common because meanings, values and norms change, and tattoos do not, Dukes said, adding that when someone gets a tattoo at an older age, the likelihood for regret is less.
We have three grown sons. Two of them wanted to be tattooed. We said to wait until you are 18 and be sure to get good artwork, Dukes said of his own family.
They complied, he said. Now, one of them has had the small tattoo removed from his back, because he did not want his young daughter to think that he thought it was a good thing to do. The other son has two tattoos. I asked him if he would ever get another one. He said that if he had no tattoos, he would not get one. Since he already has tattoos, he is more likely to get another one.

One more subject I did not expect to see in my life time.
Piercings are temporary. Eventuality the hole closes up. Tattoos are forever.
Tatooos are bug ugly.
When I was young, only sailors working class people had them and they usually had only one. I cringe when I see a beautify woman who has spoiled her looks with graffiti.
If I were planning to be on this earth another 40 years, I would invest heavily in tattoo removal technology/companies. People will tire of them.
My daughters knew growing up, they would be disinherited if they got one.
I can’t believe how many people nowadays have tattoos.
I don’t get the desire to have body art.
I expected the article would tell parents to make their kids wait, in case they decided to change their gender and wouldn’t be stuck with something.
Have you ever noticed that your healed piercings sometimes smell, well, awful??
Its something between rotting food and smelly feet, and its enough to make even your pets run (or want to give you a bath!). Some people call it ear funk, ear cheese, piercing funk, ear stink, or just plain yuk!
So exactly what produces this worse than normal, even perfume wont cover it up smell?

That's some crack "parenting" right there.
When my daughter was 18 or 19, she wanted to get a nose piercing.
I told her that since she was an adult, I couldn’t stop her but I did ask one favor. That she get it on the right side so I didn’t have to look at it while I was eating dinner.
She wised up.
All four of my kids are grown and none have wasted their money on anything stupid like tattoo’s.
Sometimes I see the streetcorner vagrants begging money with their cardboard signs. While I never get sucked in, I never even consider giving money to an otherwise strong, 24 year old guy with %3,000 of ink on his arms.
Yesterday, we were in a very busy area. A guy had a sign that said “looking for work.” There had to be 300 businesses within the next mile of road. We wondered how many had copies of his job application.
Tell them “no” ... love means setting bounds.
I HATE tatoos. I think they make women look dirty and rough.
They were just starting to be “cool” when my daughter was in 12th grade. She suggested that she was thinking she might get one. I told her how I felt and that she’d greatly regret it one day. I suggested she get a temporary one before she did anything permanent. She got something around her ankle....that thorn one.
Well, as I suspected, she wanted it off within a week. She scrubbed it with a scouring pad until it came off, and that was the end of that! She’s now 31 and married to a happy farmer. They have 3 sweet kids and has become very anti-tatoo and anti-piercing. Thank God.
I'd rather see a reasonably sized and styled tattoo than a set of plus-size ear gauges!
MY point is you can reverse piercings, tattoos you cannot.
My opinion on tattooing in general, people can do what they want, but if someone with tattoos is bothered by people being judgmental of them for having tattoos all up and down their arms and legs, I don't think they have a leg to stand on. I don't mind seeing a tattoo on people here and there, but I make judgments about someone who has tattoos on areas that are visible in business attire. And I am not the only one.
As for having a talk with kids about tattooing, I am all for that, setting expectations, ect.
I would suggest they use the following tattoo placement chart for effect:
Call me old-fashioned (I prefer “old school”), but this sort of thing completely destroys a person’s credibility in my eyes. I refuse to hire people with visible tattoos, or piercings of any kind other than earrings on women.
I wanted to express my individuality by being the only guy on earth without tatoos
I avoid the grocery store checkout if they have one of those monstrous ear lobe enlargements...
I’m not arguing, but I think of gauges as large-diameter piercings.
