For the sun to be at the head of Virgo means the day is approximately 9/23 subject to axial precession. For the moon to them be at the feet of Virgo means you are two or three days past the new moon. I would expect that to happen about every 30 years depending on the precision necessary - maybe less often if you need a specific location north or south of the ecliptic for the moon. I doubt this is the first time in human history.

Plus there is the whole thing with a planet sneaking up on us. We find comets months before they approach the sun and grow their tails. A planet would be easily visible without a telescope.
