Any 50's/60's music lovers here?

Just trying to forgot about all the sad events in the world today with the mass killings, fires, hurricanes, etc. so I've turned to music for an outlet. I know this is weird as I'm 55y/o but I love 50's and 60's music. They just don't make music like this anymore. Here are two of my favorites.

Four Preps https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXd8c1BLpRQ

Bachelors https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4opYhQAAao

What are your favs from these eras?

#35. I met Jimmy Beaumont (apparently at my Junior High School) in 1959. Found his autograph on one of our school papers.

His/Skyliners three big hits:
*Since I Don’t Have You” - 1959 #12 Billboard Top 40
* “This I Swear” - 1959 - #26 BB
* Pennies From Heaven” - 1960 - #24

I have a single of his entitled “ Everybody’s Crying” from about 1961 but it is not listed in the Billboard Top 40 hits from 1955-2000. Still a good song.

I have 1,000 45’s starting with my first one, JailHouse Rock (and color sleeve/jacket) and just inherited my sister’s 45 collection of about another 300-500 records, most in near mint/mint condition, including the Beatles (where I had a gap that is now filled).

You can’t just pick out a few singers/groups/songs from the 50’s & 60’s because the scope of the variation of the music was an explosion of sound and beat that I don’t think has ever been duplicated in American Rock & Roll Music.

Just start with Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Brook Benton, George Benson, Beach Boys, Marvelettes, Sara Vaugh, Jean & Dean, The Drifters, Platters, 4 Tops, 5th Dimension, Everly Brothers, Brenda Lee, Roy Orbison, Ricky Nelson, the Beatles, and keep on going to musical heaven with additional singers.

What a great ride it was in the 50s and 60’s. Don’t get me wrong, the 70’s had some great groups too and DISCO (there was nothing cooler than to watch John Travolta and Donna Pesco or Cynthia Rhodes dancing, and Donna Summers singing).

As long as there a record and tape players, there will be Rock and Roll. “Long Live Rock and Rock, It Will Never Die”.

I liked the Everly Brothers et al and then drifted into "Surf music". Not until the 60's R&R got going with Jefferson Airplane, Doors, etc. did I start getting interested in that.

Never had any interest in the Beatles.

The Four Lads is one of my favorite groups. Who can resist a song with a name like “Gilly, Gilly, Ossenfeffer, Katzenellen Bogen By The Sea”? I think the first song I heard by them was either “Standin’ on the Corner” or “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)”. Some fun songs, some sweet songs and some for remembering like “Moments to Remember” and “Time after Time”, all done with great harmony. One of the originals is still performing in the present-day version of the group.

Of course, I had no radio to listen to music. Would buy a 45 of something I heard bits of, and wait until the step-monster was away to play it on the family stereo,or whatever that monolith was.

Yeah I'm crazy about the Seekers, too.

Didn't know about them until it was too late... they had some farewell concerts in Royal Albert Hall in 2015... I missed out.

That vid is great, too. The Beatles recorded in that studio as well, as you for sure know.

Ah yes, Peter Greene, founder of Fleetwood mac.

I was back in the world about then, and had a PX stereo shipped home. What an awakening to be able to go buy LPs of stuff only heard in snippets overseas.

Even had a huge reel-to-reel tape recorder. Rarely used, what would I play on it?

Well, I’m shy of 60 but my oldest siblings were 11 and 15 years older and RnR ruled our roost. The 1st songs I remember hearing as a tot were Lets Twist Again and Runaway, which Gene Vincent was said to have proclaimed A perfect pop song. NYC AM Radio and Bandstand were a soundtrack to our lives and not every favorite was or had to
Be a national hit. Of course the Beatles turned the whole scene on its head closely following on their Cuban heels by a horde of hirsute invaders (hopefully the Zombies greatness will be recognized by the RnRHoF voters this year) spawning other full blown music scenes the world over with Australia and Netherlands being the most creative after our own in following the Brits. I was a devotee of the Punk / New Wave era as that was my own generations soundtrack but truth be told it was far more style than substance and much weaker material compared to the original rock days. Anyway if you are looking to delve into the original era without suffering through lps laden with filler and poor sound the myriad of Ace Records UK compilations such as Golden Age of American Rock and Roll are a great introduction to the era vs the comparatively dull Time Life collections. Revivalists like the Surfrajettes are also doing a fine job as keepers of the flame. Glad to make recommendations
