I left that part (cutting the cord) out.
I figured the young girl would be in a hurry to remove all ‘baby’ evidence from her person. Cutting herself free from any tissues would be her very first goal.
The nearest doctor or medical facility was 30 miles away.
No, my aunt was not a midwife. She just knew how to do it from her younger days when most babies were born at home.
I got two cousins who were delivered by her and one brother. The rest of us made it to the hospital-30 miles away. Back then, roads were poor and in the winter you didnt get to go many places.
You were lucky. Out in the sticks it was everyone looked out for everyone else.
Thanks for giving more information. This wasn’t some naive woman.
My mother had come from rural Nova Scotia in the 20s-——so she grew up as a country girl——even had an outhouse.
.
I don’t have enough info to comment on this woman. She may have had good intentions, no know-how.
Good thing I had my baby in the hospital, because I would not. have had a clue what to do. In fact, doc said I was fine, could go home, and I said NO. I needed to learn to change diapers, etc, so I stayed a week. I did have a little sister, but the maid took care of her and I was not allowed to touch her for months. We were pretty urbane people, but that’s a problem too when it comes to some nitty gritty life issues. .
SMH.
Lol! I just looked up who Nigel Crane is.
Ms Mears;
You are a hero and an inspiration to me.
Why? Because, I’m 61 y/o, and hoping I will be a fraction as articulate and expressive as you are some 25 years from now.
You are obviously open to learning new ways of doing things.
I tip my hat.
Well thank you very much,I love getting compliments from you young folks.
Ya, we used the outhouse also. Had electricity but the Ol man never got a bathroom put in till after I was born. Dont know why.
She knew enough that you cut the cord.
She didn't know enough to knot it or clamp it. But I don't consider that her fault.
I honestly wonder just how many women would know that it was necessary these days. Having children at home and all that is entailed in the process is so far removed from our culture today that I really think that it was just a naive mistake on her part.
Sure, arrest her for drug paraphernalia but not murder for what is most likely an innocent mistake.
Nor would I label her as stupid of dumb for not knowing how to do something she was never taught.
I'm going to cut her some slack for the cutting of the cord without knotting or clamping it as a mistake.
If the baby was thrown on the floor while smoking a pipe, guilty. During a birth, you should clamp the cord in the middle in two places and cut between the clamps. If she would have just held the baby on her chest for a few minutes, the placenta would have come out and the cord serves no purpose after that anyway. To be charged with murder, it most likely will be something more than just stupidity.
For whatever reason, reporters love to post stories with almost no information. IMO, the reporter wouldn't know what to do in an emergency birthing. The level of education of today's Millennials is frightening.
Even is she realized the baby was bleeding out, she may not have known how to stop it.
There are just so many unknowns in the story but IMO, murder involves intent and I don’t know that deliberate intent could be proved in this case unless there were really extenuating circumstances.
“I doubt that you ever saw a birth at home.”
Actually yes.
When I was about 9 years old one of those TV magazines, might have been Sickly Minutes (60 Minutes) was doing a story on women who still wanted home deliveries and had trouble finding doctors to do them. During the show they showed an actual home birth, and gave an announcement before it aired “in case parents wanted to take their kids from the TV or bring them to it”. I was watching this show with my Dad and brother. My Dad did not object to us watching and after it was over told us about my aunt and bother being born at home this way.
So yes I did one as a child.
“She is currently in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center where she faces numerous charges in addition to murder including possession of meth, drug paraphernalia, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and more. ”
Okay will buy that answer, but still she gave birth and was not smart enough after she cut the cord to clamp it. Drugs makes one retarded plus I figure she was not all that educated to start with.
I’m actually shocked she tried to cut the cord. Most baby dumped in the trash can or dumpster stories still have cord attached with placenta.
No you did not see a live birth at home. You watched a television show that had a live birth
As you know the smells and sights and energy of the room is far different in person
Point being people in my family did. I have seen it on TV either as a child or when in High School/College.
I have enough sense to clamp the cord.
This woman? Wanna be she’s never? What to be she had no idea? I mean I don’t know as I don’t know HER but knowing how stupid these young people are these days it would not surprise me in the least.
Like I said they are NOT taught childbirth they are taught contraception and abortion. Now you tell me in those two classes where she would have been taught to clamp the cord? One might argue she failed her contraception and abortion class because she did “fall” pregnant in the first place.
Look you all are just going to have to come to grips on how stupid these young people really are.
Oh and PS don’t know if this counts have delivered a lot of kittens.
Had to end up rushing one cat to the Vet because the kitten was stuck in her vagina, she could not push it out and I could not help her.
The vet yelled at me “you let that cat get pregnant??!!” I snapped back “yea and I let my 14 year old daughter get pregnant too!” in a sarcastic way. Then I said “do what you have to do, don’t worry I’ll pay!”.
Shes a meth addict
You dont clamp cords for animals.
You live bashing public schools. Thats fine do as you wish But dont be ridiculous. This is a tragedy that has to do with unmarried young pregnancies and drug addiction
