Disney and Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok got the 2017 holiday movie season started in strong fashion, debuting with over $120 million as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to fill theaters. Additionally, STX's A Bad Moms Christmas brought in over $20 million for its five-day start, but it's the road ahead that will tell the full story as it hopes to play well into the holiday season. Overall, the top twelve delivered a combined $166 million, which is a massive improvement over last week but still falls short of the $183 million for the same weekend last year, which not only featured the $85 million debut of Doctor Strange, but openings for Trolls and Hacksaw Ridge.
With an estimated $121 million, Disney and Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok delivered the seventh largest opening for a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, topping the $117 million debut for Spider-Man: Homecoming earlier this year. On average, films in the MCU deliver 2.72x multipliers, which would put Ragnarok's domestic run over $330 million if it merely holds to the average, but we're expecting it to play a bit better thanks in large part to strong reviews and opening weekend audience reception

Fun movie and I consider Thor one of the weaker characters

Has “Thor” grown his hair long again, or is he still looking like a Viking with a crewcut? I guess it doesn’t effect ticket sales.
The sequences with Anthony Hopkins are full of good lines.

Comic book movies continue to prop up Hollyweird.
The only movies I’ll see in the theater any more are those in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars franchises. Anything else can wait for the DVD release.

My daughter and I saw it last night. Easily the funniest and most fun of any of the Marvel movies. Seriously, we were snorting and laughing the entire time (Imagine them figuring a way to get a Willy Wonka song worked in, for example). The one liners are non-stop. Several hilarious cameos also. Just an all around entertaining movie.
They, along with animated flicks, account for 80% of the top 10 films of last year.
Add in fantasy and science fiction, and you're up to 100%.

These days there are only three types of movies doing well: comic book, Star Wars, and horror movies.

Not to mention the cost. Thirty bucks or so for me and the wife is too much to take a risk on entertainment, when so much of what is produced is just garbage.
So many times I've started a "critically acclaimed" movie on a streaming service, only to abandon it within 30 minutes.
I'd say it's more a case of our culture being incorporated into theirs. This would not have been the case forty, or even twenty years ago. "Star Wars" and "Independence Day" weren't megahits in China at the time,,,but the world has much of an American-dominated pop culture now.

Yup, I just went to box office mojo and the 5 comic book movies released this year (Wonder Woman, Guardians, Spider-Man, Logan, and Thor) account for 16.6% of the total box office. It will probably end up even higher by the end of the year.
Animated films are also doing extremely well, on the whole. Add in fantasy films with an occasional dash of action-adventure, and you'll get 90%+ of the top 10 films for every year of the last decade.
For better or worse, the days of the box office being dominated by dramas, musicals, westerns, and comedies is over.

Already slightly higher than last year, wherein 6 superhero films accounted for 15.9% of the box office. Thor will be a huge hit, so it may break 20% this year.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she's not Norse...she's an extra-dimensional alien that the ancient Norse people incorporated into their myths, which gives Marvel an in-universe rationale for "diverse" casting.
