Calling All Freeper Gearheads!
Let's talk about first cars! What was you first vehicle? What did you like most about the car? What drove you nuts? Do you wish that you still had it?
The first car I owned was a 1970 Ford Torino with a 351 Cleveland engine. This was in 1975. The thing I liked most was that it was mine. I didnt like that it was green. Yes, I wish I still had it. It was a pretty cool car and if you wait long enough anything becomes cool eventually.
No worries.
I agree, the dude did a fine job.
What drove me nuts was owning an orphan car that parts were always getting harder to come by. I wish I still had it, power and style that was different than the average car on the road.
My first car was 1939 Plymouth coupe with a dodge transmission that cost $50 and worth every penny in 1966. It was a weekly car, work on it for a week and drive it for a day.
In 68 I up graded to a $100 heavily used WV Microbus, 4 speeds and all of 32 horsepower. 18 wheelers would pass me going up mountains. Crossed halfway across the country a number times with that thing while the interstates were being built.
I still have the 1968 Harley rapido I bought new in 1968. Just restored it last summer. Paid about 800, now it’s worth over 5K. Also still have a 1970 beetle I bought new. It’s worth about 15K now.
I’ll wager that you have many, many fond memories of those drives across the country.
Labours of love, I’d wager.
“We’ll approach speeds of 5 mph!” :D
My first car was a 1966 Ford Falcon, four door. No radio; no AC (did have a heater, tho’). Simple enough that I could work on it myself.
“Labours of love, Id wager.”
Yep once you get into your seventies...
Favorite car: Dad built Indy cars in the 50's and in the mid 70's he built up an Offy style head for my 240Z, twin cam, 24 valve - dual Weber carby's, GMC Roots blower and Nitrous. Wicked fast. Primer gray with intake stacks punched thru the hood.
Girls would scream when I'd stand on it - they couldn't get out of their clothes fast enough.
What a GREAT car!!!
Sweet! How long did you have her?
With my first full time job, I got my first car. A two year old 1978 Pontiac Trans Am like this one. Only mine didn't have the hood decal. I liked the Firebird James Garner drove on the Rockford Files. After seeing Smokey And The Bandit, I had to have one. Mine had a rust hole by the fender vent. My mom let me use her credit card to buy 4 new tires. I cut open the rear of the hood scoop. The big V-8 always sounded nice. I kept a couple of screwdrivers in the console to tighten all the screws that kept coming lose. At this time, I lived a few blocks from the beach. I worked on the river. I would take off the T-tops when I drove to and from work. It was the perfect car for me at that time.
It was a 1952 Ford, six cylinder with overdrive.. I tore low gear out of it trying to hot rod.
Did yours have the 2.0L engine?
It was the most fun vehicle I ever owned. Turned the middle seat around and had a traveling lounge. On weekends would bootleg for a fair sized clientèle at my college located in a dry county in Arkansas. There was usually a crowd wanting to go with. Only got stopped once and just happened to have the Federal judges son with us. Got off with a warning and didn’t ever get stopped again.
