I don't know what these are but they are installed every couple of miles around here. It is a big deal because an entirely new utility pole has to be installed which is at least 10 feet higher than the others.

Each meter has it’s own ip address. That is a wireless transceiver to send and receive data to and from your meters and control relay inside.

Nope. We have three smart meters and all the power lines are underground. I think smart meters communicate through the power lines.

That cannot be true, this is out in rural areas where the density is not great at all.

Be happy they look so clean on your poles. There is a big effort underway to clean up antenna infrastructure.

Makes sense with the poles already there for other purposes. So just
use taller poles and improve coverage without adding other structures.
If you read the articles they are to augment cell phone service.

I’m in a fairly low density area and have those things on utility poles, haven’t seen a meter reader in many years, the other FReeper is probably right.
