Republicans have persuaded themselves that keeping control of Congress in 2018 depends on passing their tax-cut plans. And it could work out that way.
But a national poll released today shows that President Donald Trump and his party have an enormous amount of work to do. Right now, the tax bill only adds to their burdens.
The telephone survey of 1,508 voters was conducted by Quinnipiac University from Nov. 29 to Dec. 4 as the Senate pushed through its tax-cut bill, setting up conference committee negotiations on a final version with the House. It carries a margin for error of 3.1 percentage points.
The poll shows Americans oppose the Republican tax-cut effort by nearly two-to-one, as 29 percent approve and 53 percent disapprove. That's a worse showing than Obamacare ever recorded, and more unpopular than former President Bill Clinton's tax increase plan when it passed in 1993.

But it should cause some concern.
I believe this plan will hurt Republicans in the short term and benefit them 4-6 years out when the economy is raging.
Still, the numbers are daunting.
Anyone remember the Congressional elections of 1994?

The Dems have been shouting from the rooftops the tax plan favors the rich but when the middle class gets their tax bill and sees they are getting a cut, they will change their opinion. I didn’t see the break down of the polled voters either. They are likely a majority Dems. (it’s like Rush always says, the polls have become a vehicle to a news story instead of simply information. They take polls and then report on them as though they are facts.)
They should have done real reform, not something half-assed via reconciliation, and dared dems to filibuster it.
Correct. Quinnipiac varied from “Up by 10” in August to “Up by 7” in October, in 2016.

People actually believe these push-poll articles? The tax overhaul hasn’t affected ONE American yet, good or bad.
Seeing quite a few instances of this sort of article lately. It all comes down to, “You’re not going to like it! Really, you’re not! PLEASE don’t like it!”
Problem is that they have not clearly explained much detail on the changes, how they simplify things, and what’s in it for everyone. So, instead, most people hearing their MSM news each day are hearing about how bad, how unfair, and how much more they are going to pay. Republicans forgot that they have to explain, be the messenger.

Pass a budget like Trump submitted with massive spending cuts to make tax reduction palatable.
Nobody knows what the final tax plan actually is.
I think there is pretty wide distrust that government in any form is going to do *anything* that is going cost people less money than they pay now. I think that sentiment is nearly universal. The last time government said they were/it was doing something for the public good that would cost less, the government spun out 0bamacare. I am sure there are some people who like 0care, but I don’t know any. And I hear stories of absolutely ordinary people with families with $24K healthcare bills. So IMO there is quite valid reason to distrust the government; over and above the generic ones. Additionally, there is no secret that no matter how hard they are working on it, the Republicans know well that they damn well better get this passed even if it is a piece of crap or their support will dissolve. So bottom line, I think expectations are fairly low and there is some reason to imagine it could be a real pack of blundering moves. There some people in high tax states who will lose their state & property tax deductions; and without wanting to analyze this or any of the other minutiae, that could produce $40K and $50K swings in tax liabilities. Yeah, that could be scary, putting it in the hands of a relentlessly klutzy government.
Point being, I can’t see there being much enthusiasm over it.
It’s more important to screw Americans so illegals can keep their benefits.

Do you think a real tax cut accompanied by a real shrinkage of the government behemoth would make people happy? Maybe restore the gov’t as a fraction of GDP to where it was in 1984 or so.
They were supposed to end the taxpayer giveaway to illegal aliens.
They did not.
Actually, it should help Republicans in the short and long term. Unlike Obamacare, this plan will produce tangible results by Nov 2018. Even with out it, the economy will grow at 2.5 to 3 %. With it, the growth will be 3 - 3.5%. This will have a real impact on wages and employment.
Also, except for high income people in CA, most will experience a reduction in taxes.
Well... lets ponder this for a moment:
1. The Leftist Mainstream Media has been 100% pumping out anti-GOP tax plan rhetoric and propaganda - indeed, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen this degree of direct, false propaganda in a single issue. It is unreal.
2. It is this same, corrupt, Leftist Mainstream Media pumping out all the supposed poling...
3. This is the same Leftist Media that were confident Hillary was going to win last year...
Had this same Leftist Mainstream Media bothered to even pretend to do their jobs when Obama was railroading his signature namesake healthSCARE legislation through (shutting out all GOP from any and all discussions, planning, or debate) - Obamacare would never have passed.
It depends upon what you mean “make people happy”. I can’t speak in such general terms. Let’s remind ourselves that huge numbers of people in this country are government dependent. And I don’t mean social security, I mean various welfare and grant programs. Many people who are *not* gov’t-dependent think *there should be lots more* of these programs and all sorts of things should be done to help the poor and shelter the homeless and etc; etc. Many people in the country have zero, and I mean zero appreciation of living in a free society and the responsibilities and plusses and minuses of living in a free country. And a great number of people are just flat out envious turds who think that a business tax break is just a pile of money in the CEO’s pocket.
Such a tax cut and gov’t reduction probably isn’t going make any members of those sets of folks happy. I’m not sure if *anything* except free college, housing, healthcare and food would make them happy. Oh, and a car. With free gas. And an Iphone. And I would bet you that if you proposed a system in which most of those people could keep 8% of the money they earned and the government took ALL the rest in exchange for providing all those other things I listed, many many people would jump at the chance.
I think you have a good read on the country and it’s a sad commentary.
