A Hull mum is spending her first Christmas with a miracle baby a year after she was told her little boy would be born with a life-threatening lung condition.
Yvonne Exell was 20 weeks pregnant when she was told her baby, Ruben, was suffering from congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM).
This is a benign mass of abnormal lung tissue which affects just one in 10,000 pregnancies, and can cause premature birth and miscarriage.
It was when I went to my 20-week scan that the doctors realised something was wrong," said Yvonne. "I had to go to a consultant who examined me and explained to me what CCAM was.
"Its abnormal tissue in the lungs which squashed his lung and heart right to the side near enough to his back.
I was given the option to terminate the pregnancy as it was unlikely the baby would survive, but there was no doubt in my mind that I would carry on.
Yvonne was closely monitored, and had to take "awful" steroids through the rest of her pregnancy.
But due to the rarity of the condition, despite the support of her husband, Arnie, and her doctors, she still felt like she was on her own.
"There was no support as no one knew what it was," she said. "My GP and midwife had no idea and my consultant had only seen five CCAM pregnancies since 2005. I went down to a Harley Street Clinic a couple of times and met one lady there but that was it.
She finally found Facebook page, Parents of CCAM Babies. Its great," she Yvonne, who is also mum to Ivan, 9 and AJ, 5, said. "Most of the people on there live in America or Australia.

Human beings are not disposable.
So much for the Hippocratic Oath, “I will...never do harm to anyone.”
Yeah it’s very sad. I don’t know how any doctor can encourage or perform abortions.
Merry Christmas to little Reuben and his family. Heartwarming story!!
How utterly unethical it is to propose abortion as an option. It’s like your family doctor told you your husband had a life-threatening condition, and you said, “What’ll we do?” and the reply was, “Well, you could choose to kill him.”
Good one.
Abortion wasn't the huge issue it is today so my folks hadn't really thought about being pro life or not.
My parents prayed about it and felt killing the baby was wrong. They would trust God to give them the strength to handle whatever the outcome would be.
The Dr had already got another Dr to sign saying the abortion wad necessary (2 Dr signatures were needed back then). She wasn't too happy when my folks told her no.
My brother was born healthy and as normal as a older brother can be.
Abortion wasn't the huge issue it is today so my folks hadn't really thought about being pro life or not.
I recall the "Rubella Robs the Cradle" literature (March of Dimes, 1972), about measles causing birth defects.
MERRY CHRISTMAS Reuben and Yvonne!!!
Because I would deliver my son after my 35th birthday, I was pushed towards genetic testing and amniocentesis and special sonograms. Thank God, the wife of a guy I worked with let me know I could refuse any test I didn’t want.
The doctor who would’ve done the amnio was upset with me - saying if something was wrong that we could mourn before the baby arrived and deal with it “better”. I told him I’d already lost one child and mourning twice wasn’t anything I wanted to do. (He didn’t read the book of my file!)
our baby was born 5 1/2 weeks early - one week in NICU and home. PCG monitor because of ONE incident in NICU. HEALTHY BABY!
Just proof that doctors don’t know everything. That is great that your parents did what was right and that your brother was healthy. :D
